Patented Dec. 1, 1908.
i Application le. June 27, 1908. Serial No. 440,755. Y
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known thatI, ABRAHAM L. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whicli-` Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view through my improved box, showing the parts thereof as arranged whenV the box is closed and used as a storage or shipping receptacle; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the parts of my box as arranged when the box is open and used as a vending receptacle; and Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview, partly in section, of my said box. i
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in boxes, the object being to provide a box adapted to be used as a shipping, display, or vending receptacle, which is simple, made up of very few parts, easily manufactured, and at slight cost.
With this object in v1ew,my invention consists in the novel arrangement and, construction of the several parts of my box, all
as will hereinafter be described and pointed out in the claims. l
My box hasheretofore been used by mein storing, shipping, displaying, and vending bottles of perfume, but it is obvious that my said box may be used for many and various purposes; and also, while I have shown my box as rectangular in shape, itmay be made of any shape or size desired.
As shown in the drawings, my box is made up of three parts, thebodyportion A, the top portion B, and bottom portion C.'
The body portion A, as shown in Fig.V 3, is made of four connected side walls, without top or bottom, forming an open retaining or surrounding casing or framefor the top B and bottom C, which are adapted to loosely and slidably t therein.y
The top portion B consistsof theportion or wall 1 and the four side walls'2 connected thereto, and the bottom C consists of the portion or wall 3 andthe four side walls 4 connected thereto. The combined width or depth of side walls'2'of top B and side walls 4 of bottom C is substantially equal to the width or depth of the walls of body portion A, so that when said top B andbottom C are in position within said body portion or casing A, the portions or walls l and 3 of said top B and bottom C are on a level or `substantially lflush with the edges of said casing A, as shown in Fig. 3.
When the box is used as a storage or shipping receptacle, the top B and bottom C are placed within vcasing A as shown in Figs. 1 and 8, in which position the box is closed and the goods are adapted to be contained therein, an outer'wrapper, not shown, being preferably used to-hold the casing A, top B, and bottom together. When it is desired to display the goods in vending the same, as the top B and bottom C loosely fit in said inclosing casing A, no attaching means being used, the parts of my box are easily disconnected, or thebox is easily opened, by
#simply raising `the casing A. In displaying the goods, either now the top B or bottom C 4is reversed, as shown in Fig. 2, and the casing A placed in position around the same, the bottom C or top B acting as a support for the other in displaying the goods. Depending upon the goods to be displayed, either top or bottom may be used to hold the goods in displaying the same, simply by reversing the `position of the said parts, as will Vbe readily understood; and instead of having both top B and bottom C in open position as shown in Fig. 2, when it is desired to display the goods, either the top or bottom alone may be turned to open position in orderto display the goods therein, the other part, either top or bottom, remaining in closed position, when such latter part may be used at the same time as a storage receptacle, but in whatever position the parts may be placed, the top or bottom acts as a supporting vbase for the other in displaying the goods, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, the casing A `serving tohold said top and bottom in operative position.
It will thus be seen that my box is very simple, composed of few parts, and is cheap to manufacture, and the parts` thereof are easily manipulated in changing or reversing the several positions of the same, as above described. The depth or width of the walls 2 of top B and walls 4 of bottom C may be the same, or the depth-of walls 2 may be greater thanl the depth of walls 4, as shown herein, depending upon the uses to which the box is putl and so that the goods may be properly displayed when the box is opened. As shown in Fig. 3, the portion l of top B and the walls of casing A may be ornaniented, if desired, Yto add to the attractiveness of the box, the box being adapted to be placed in or upon a show-case or other suitable place when the box is used as a display or vending` receptacle. Vheu the box is used as a storagel or shipping receptacle, the edges of the walls 2 of top B and of walls 4 of bottoni C are adapted to ineet within the inclosing easing- A, whereby a neat and conipaet, closed box is provided.
Having thus described niy invention, what I claiin anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A box consisting of an inclosing traine and top and bottoni portions loosely and reversibly fitting therein; substantially as described.
2. A'boxconsisting of an inclosing :traine and top and bottoni portions loosely and reversibly fitting therein, said top or bottoni portions being adapted to support the other within said traine; substantially as described.
3. A. box consisting of an inclosingv frame coniposed of four connected side walls, a top consisting of a portion l and four side walls connected thereto, and a bottoni composed of a. portion 3 and four side Walls connected thereto, said top and bottom being adapted to loosely and reversibly lit in said frame substantially as described.
4. A box consisting of an inclosing,r frame composed of four connected side walls, ay top consisting of a portion l and tour side walls connected thereto, and a bottoni composed ot a portion 3 and four side walls connected thereto, said top and bottoni loosely and reversibly iitting in said traine and the coinbined depth of the side walls of said top and bottoni being` substantially equal to the depth of the walls oi said frame; substan tially as described.
A box consisting' ot an inclosinpl frame composed of tour connected side walls, a top consistingof a portion l and four side Yalls connected thereto, and a bottoni composed of a portion 3 and four side 'alls connected thereto, said top and bottom loosely fitting in said traine and said traine being slidably removable from around said top and bottoni; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed niy naine to this speeilication, in the presence oi two subscribing, witnesses.
