Description
No. 639,054. Patentd Dec. l2, I899. A. M. JENKINSON.
B O X.
(Application filed June 6, 1899.)
(No Modal.)
I NlTED PATENT Prion,
ALEXANDER M. J ENKINSON OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE R. d: W. JENKINSON COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 639,054, dated December 12, 1899.
Application filed June 6,1899. Serial No. 719,549. (No model.)
To aZZ- whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. JEN KIN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boxes, and has for its object to provide a form of box whereby the lid thereof can be used to support the box proper, so as to display the contents thereof or to permit the contents thereof to be easily removed therefrom.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts,as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use the box, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, 'in which- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of my improved box, showing the same closed; and Fig. 2 is a like view showing the lid removed and the box'proper supported thereon.
Like numerals herein indicate like parts in both figures of the drawings.
My improved box 1 can be formed of wood, pasteboard, or any suitable material desired and is of rectangular shape, having the rectangular-shaped cover or lid 2 and the rec tangular-shaped box or receptacle 3. The cover or lid 2 is provided with the ends 4, top 5, and sides v6, and the box or receptacle 3 is provided with the ends 7, bottom 8, and sides i); t The receptacle or box 3 is adapted to telescope'svithin the cover or lid 2 when closed, and triangular-shaped recesses or seats are formed within the sides 6 of the cover or lid 2. These triangular-sl1aped recesses or seats 10 can be formed in the sides 6 of the lid 2 apex 12 of said recesses or seats 10 extends within said sides 6 only a sufficient distance toward the top 5 of said lid 2 in order to give or allow enough material between said apex l2 and the top 5 of the lid 2 to prevent breaking or rupture of the lid 2 at that point.
The use and operation of my improved box are as follows: After the box 1 hasbeenformed in any suitable manner the receptacle 3 can be filled with the desired materials or articles it is to contain and the lid 2 placed over the same. \Vhen it is desired to open the box 1 and support the receptacle 3 for convenience in removing the articles therein or for the purpose of displaying the same, the lid 2 can be removed from the receptacle 3 and laid down upon any suitable object, so that its top 5 rests upon such object. After this is. accomplished the receptacle 3,with its c0ntents,can be placed within the triangular recesses or seats 10 in the sides 6 of the lid 2, so that the one side 9 and the bottom 8 of said receptacle 3 rest upon and within the faces 11 and apexes 12 of said recesses or seats 10, and the recep tacle 3 is supported thereby.
It will thus be seen that my improved box is cheap and simple in its construction and use and can be made out of any suitable or desired material. It will allow the lid to be used for supporting the receptacle without injuring or weakening the lid in any manner or adding any expense to the cost of production and manufacture. By its use the receptacle and its contents-such as cigars, stogies, candies, rise-can be supported and displayed without destroying the finish of the box or lid or causing any annoyance, inconvenience, or trouble thereby.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A box formed of a receptacle, a lid fitting over said receptacle, and recesses or seats within the sides of said lid for supporting said receptacle when removed.
2. A box formed of a receptacle, a lid fitting over said receptacle, and triangularshaped recesses or seats within the sides of said lid for supporting said receptacle when removed.
3. A box formed of a receptacle, a lid fit to engage with the side and bottom of said receptacle to support the samewhen removed. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set ting over said receptacle, and triangularshaped recesses or seats formed in the sides of said lid adapted to engage With the side and bottom of said receptacle and support my hand, at Pittsburg, in the county of Alle- 5 the same when removed. gheny and State of Pennsylvania, this 3d day 15 4. A box formed of a rectangular-511aped of June, A. D. 1899. receptacle, a 1'ectangularsl1aped lid fitting ALEXANDER M. JENKINSON. over said receptacle, and triangular-shaped Witnesses: recesses or seats formed in the sides of said A. J. AYRES, 1o lid at an angle of forty-five degrees adapted. B. AULL.
