UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS DESSAUER AND SAMUEL BARUGH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEAL AND PROTECTOR FOR KNOTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1908.
Application filed December 12, 1907. Serial No. 406,153.
- United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improyed Seal and Protector for Knots, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in devices adapted for use in connection with packages, for protecting the knot of the cord with which the package is tied, and effectively preventing said knot from being untied or tampered with, without giving due indication thereof to the person receiving the package.
The device may be used in connection with any form of package, and is readily applied to the knot, so that the knot cannotbe untied or the device cannot be removed, without either breaking or mutilating the protector.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, formin a part of this specification, in which simi ar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package provided with a knot protector constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section through said protector; Fig. 3 is a plan view; and Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In the preferred form of our protector illustrated in the accompanying drawings, we employ two sheet metal sections 10 and 11, adapted to be rigidly secured together with one of said sectionsbetween the knot and the body of the package, and the other of said sections adapted to cover the knot from the outside. The section 10 is formed of a flat piece of sheet metal, having four outwardly-extending arms 12, each provided with a perforation adjacent its outer end. The section 11 is also formed of sheet metal, but is bent to form a central dome-shaped portion 13 and four outwardly-extending arms 14, corresponding to the arms 12 of the other section. The ends of the arms are bent to lie in the same plane and to engage with .the corresponding arms of the other section, while the edge portions of the dome intermediate each pair of adjacent arms, is cut away to leave side openings 15, through which the cords may extend.
In employing our improved protector, the cord is so wrapped about the package that portions of the cord cross each other at substantially right angles, and the knot is formed at the intersection. In Fig. 1, we have illustrated a package 16, having a cord wrapped about the same and having one portion 17 intersecting a second portion 18 at substantially a right angle, and a knot 19 by which the ends of the cord are secured together, disposed adjacent this intersection. The sheet metal section 10 of the protector is slipped beneath the knot, and is so disposed that the four arms extend outwardly between the four engaging portions of the knot. The section 11 is then placed over the knot with the arms 14 in engagement with the arms 12, and with the portions of the cord extending out through the side openings. The corresponding pairs of arms of the two sections are then rigidly secured together in such a manner that they cannot be separated without leaving a permanent indication that the device has been tampered with.
For fastening the arms, each arm, adjacent each outer end, is preferably provided with an opening therethrough, the openings of each arm 12 coming into registry with the openings of the corresponding arm 14. A tubular metal fastener 20, having a flange 21 at one end thereof, is then extended through each pair of registering openings, and by means of a suitable tool, the upper end of the fastener is bent over to form a flange 22, engaging with the upper section of the arm 14. With the four fasteners bent in place, the two sections of the protector cannot possibly be separated without breaking the fasteners or breaking the sections, and if the fasteners are broken, new ones can not be inserted without this fact being evident to the person receiving the package.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A seal and knot protector, comprising two sections, one adapted to lie beneath the knot and having a plurality of outwardlyextending arms and the other ada ted to lie above the knot and having a plura ity of outwardly-extending arms adapted to engage with the armsof the first-mentioned section, and separate means independent of said arms for securing the latter together in pairs.
2. A seal and knot protector, comprising a sheet metal section adapted to lie beneath the knot and having outwardly-extending arms, a sheet metal section adapted to lie above the knot and having a central domeshaped portion and a plurality 'of arms adapted to engage with the arms of the firstmentioned section, and a plurality of metal ,fasteners each adapted to engage with an adjacent pair of arms to secure the latter together and hold said sections rigid in respect to each other.
3. A seal and knot protector, comprising a sheet metal section adapted to lie beneath the knot and having four outwardly-extending arms, a sheet metal section adapted to lie above the knot and having a central domeshaped portion provided with openings in the sides thereof and a plurality of outwardlyextending arms adapted to engage with the arms of the first-mentioned section, the pairs of adjacent arms having registering openings thereth'rough, and a plurality of metal fasteners each extending through'the registering openings ofa pair of arms and bent to rigidly secure the sections together.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
