WINFRED MUDGE BROOKS, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 E. J. BROOKE: & (10., OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SEAL.
Application filed December 22, 1916.
To all 10 hom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NINFRED MUDGE Bnoons, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of East Orange, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to press fastened seals and more specifically to seals of this type made of sheet metal. The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means of locking the ends of a seal shackle within such a sheet metal seal so that it can not be removed or tampered with without detection.
One sheet of drawings accompanies this specification as part thereof, in which like reference characters denote like parts throughout.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 represents a top view of the improved seal, sealed; Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 respectively are top and side views of one form of the seal part in its preliminary shape showing a round hole and eight petals; Figs. 5 and 6 show similar views of a second form of the same part having a square hole and four petals; Figs. 7 and 8 show similar views of a third form of the same part having a triangular hole and four petals; Fig. 9 shows a wire shackle having round loops on either end adapted to engage the bur of the round hole shown in the seal part of Fig. 3; Fig. 10 shows shackle with square loops adapted to seal of Fig. 5 and Fig. 11 shows shackle with triangular loops adapted to the seal of Fig. '7; Fig. 12 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line AA of Fig. 1.
The shackle a is provided on each end with a loop m m as in Fig. 9 or m -m' as in Fig. 10 or m m as in Fig. 11 the shape being variable to suit circumstances, the seal 72 before sealing is substantially tulip shaped having a hole (Z punched upwardly in the center of its bottom producing an upwardly projecting bur 0 round as in Fig. 3, square as in Fig. or triangular as in Fig. 7 the shape in the particular case being adapted to the loop on the ends of the shackle to be used with it. A series of vertical petals c surround the bottom of the tulip having pointed apexes and being Specification of Letters Patent.

so shaped as to join neatly together in the sealing operation as hereinafter described. It will be noted that the entire seal part b is pressed from one piece of sheet metal, the bur c and petals 0 being integral parts of the same piece.
In operation one loop of the shackle m is placed over the bur c of a seal part and the bur pressed downward upon it thus preliminarily securing one end of the shackle to the inner side of the seal part. This may be done either at the factory or in the actual sealing operation. The shackle is then passed through the staple or other parts to be secured and the free looped end placed over the former within the seal. The petals c are then pressed inward and downward with some suitable press until converging at the center they pass through the superimposed looped ends of the shackle and enter the bur-red hole (Z in the bottom of the seal as shown in Fig. 12.
The seal upon the completion of the sealing operation is peculiarly compact, the shackle ends being firmly secured and en tire-1y inclosed within the sheet metal seal part, the loops of the shackle ends conforming closely to the bur from the lower disk and the points of the petals fitting snugly into the central hole and filling same.
Modifications of the general form of the seal part and of the shackle loops and corresponding hole and bur in the seal part are readily permissible within the scope of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim:
1. A press fastened seal comprising a shackle of wire having a loop at each end, a hollow sheet metal seal part having two faces, and centrally inturned portions of said faces adapted to pass through the superimposed loops of said shackle and secure same within said seal part.
2. A press fastened seal comprising a shackle of wire having a loop at each end and a seal part of sheet metal substantially in the form of a hollow disk having inturned portions of the disk faces, those of the upper face passing interiorly those of the lower, said inturned parts passing through and securing the superimposed loop ends of the shackle centrally within said seal part.
3. A press fastened seal comprising a 1 Patented Mar. 13, 1917.

shackle having a loop at each end and a one piece sheet metal seal part, said seal part being preliminarily pressed into a substantially tulip shaped part having a bottom a hole punched upwardly in the center of said bottom producing an up Wardly projecting bur said bur being adapted to receive over it one looped end of the shackle and to be then pressed down upon same preliminarily securing said shackle one to said bottom, a plurality of vertical petals surrounding said bottom having pointed apexes and adapted to be pressed inward and downward when the second shackle end loop has been placed over that prellminarlly secured to the bottom, the points of said petalsconverging at the center and being pressed downward by the sealing operation through the superimposed looped shackle ends and into the 20 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of latents, Washington, D. C.
