LORENZO O. BUTLER, OF ARION, IOWA.
BOAT-PROPELLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 15, 1908.
Application filed January 22, 1908. Serial No. 412,175.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoRENZo O. BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arion, in the county of Crawford and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Propellers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in boats and especially to propeller and steering apparatus therefor, and comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a horizontal section showing the operative parts of my invention in top plan view. Fig. 2 is a detail view in cross section. Fig. 3 is a modified form of the steering mechanism, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the hull of a boat having the screw propeller B mounted upon a shaft O, which shaft is j ournaled in suitable bearings.
D designates a beveled gear wheel fixed to the end of the propeller shaft and is in mesh with a bevel pinion J mounted upon a stub shaft J, which pinion J meshes with the bevel gear E mounted upon the shaft G.
The shaft G is journaled at its upper end in a beam H and its lower end in the bottom of the hull of the boat.
I designates a fly or balance wheel which is fixed to the shaft G and is positioned in a circular outlined recess K formed in the bottom of the boat, so that the upper outer face of the wheel will be flush with the bottom of the latter. Said stub shaft J is carried by the beam H and has an eccentric pin J projecting from the face thereof, to
- which one end of the pitman Q is pivoted,
the other end of the pitman being pivotally connected to a pin L upon the operating lever L having handles L projecting one from each edge thereof.
P, designates a block which has grooves P upon its upper surface, said block being fastened to the bottom of the boat.
A rod S is horizontally disposed and supportedby the opposite sides of the boat, and S designates oscillating levers pivotally mounted upon said rod. To the lower end of each lever Sis connected one of the hooked ends S of the rods S the forward ends of said rods being bent at angles as at S forming means for the engagement of the foot of the operator whereby one or the other of the oscillating levers S is caused to tilt.
T designates an angled lever which is fixed to the rudder shaft T, and T designates rods, each of which has pivotal connection with an arm of said angled lever and its other end pivotally connected to an oscillating lever S whereby as one or the other levers S is moved the rudder may be thrown to one side or the other.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have shown a modification of the steering mechanism in which the rod for steering the apparatus is dispensed with and a cord WV substituted therefor, which cord passes about a pulley W fixed to the rudder shaft, thence extending under eyes or pulleys and forwardly extended passing through the crank shaft V which is journaled in front of the seat X within convenient reach of the operator, whereby the latter by pushing his foot may cause the shaft to be steered.
Having thus described my invention what I claim, is:
1. In combination with a boat having a rod supported by the opposite walls thereof, oscillating levers mounted upon said rod, a rudder, an angled lever connected to the rudder shaft, rods connecting the arms of said angled lever with said oscillating levers, longitudinal movable rods pivotally connected to the lower ends of the oscillating levers, the forward ends of said rods being bent to form foot rests, as set forth.
2. In combination With a boat having a rod supported by the opposite walls thereof, oscillating levers mounted upon said rod, a rudder, an angled lever connected to the rudder shaft, rods connecting the arms of said angled lever with said oscillating levers, longitudinal movable rods pivotally connected to the lower ends of the oscillating levers, the forward ends of said rods being bent to form foot rests, a grooved block mounted within the boat and in which said longitudinally movable rods are guided, as set forth.
32 In combination with a boat having a rod supported by the opposite Walls thereof, oscillating levers mounted upon said rod, a rudder, an angled lever connected to the rudder shaft, rods connecting the arms of said angled lever with said oscillating levers, longitudinal movable rods pivotally connected to the lower ends of the oscillating levers, the forward ends of said rods being bent upwardly and toward each other forming foot rests for a foot, and means for guiding the samle in their longitudinal movements, as set fort 4. In combination with a boat having a recess formed in the bottom thereof, a ropeller shaft, a vertically disposed s aft mounted in suitable bearings in the boat, a balance wheel fixed to said vertically disposed shaft and positioned Within said recess, bevel pinions, one mounted upon each of said shafts and in mesh with each other, a pivotal propelling lever, and connections between the same and said gear wheels, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LORENZO C. BUTLER.
Witnesses: CHAS. HORN, M. W. MAXEY.
