Be it 'known that I, FEDKOFEDZYNA, a citizen of Russia, resldlng at New. York,
'.county of New York, and State -of New Yorin-have invented certain new and useful f Improvements in Flying-Machines, of which the following lis a specification. n
This invention relates to improvements 1n aeronautic apparatus and 'particularly to fheavier than'air types.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an apparatus with a motor by'which the apparatus is driven through the air, the motor alsoI being engageable with the driving wheels at the front of the apparatus,
whereby it is caused positively Vto move overv a level surface preliminary to rising in the air.
A further object is togcombine with the apparatus means whereby' a raising effect' may beobtained so that the run prior to ascension may be materially decreased in its extent.
These and other like objects, which will become more fully manifest as the description progresses, are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which z- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a fi ing machinemade in accordance with t e invention. v

'llhe car 16-of the aeroplane is essentially rectangular in cross section, having sides 11, joined with a curved bottom 12, and apartial cover 14, the front of the car being closed by a late 15. gI An opening 16 is formed throng the cover at the back of the car in which the operator may rest upon aA wise on a vertical axis in the manner of a hinge therein. A hinge has one element secured to the leaf 25 and another element attached to the narrow front end of a triangular wing 31. Rigidly secured on the lower semi-circular element 23 is a bracket 33, its lower end forming bearings 34, for a shaft 35, upon which is landing wheel 36.
Un the upper side of the triangular wing 31 is a vertical blade 38, and rigidly secured at. the upper end-of the pins 24 is a transverse bar 40, having attached to its oppositey ends cables, respectively 41 and 42 (see Fig. 1), the same extending through openings formed in the plate 19, and engaged upon drums 43 and 44 fixed on a transverse spindie 45 journaled in the sides 11 of the car.
Set in the vane 31l is lanother transverse bar 47 and engaged at its ends are cables 48 and 49, passing below the lateral blades 20 ,on each side and over pulleys 52 attached in any desired direction.
AThe horizontal blade or rudder 31 is moved up and down upon the hinge 30. by means of a cable 55, the same extending toward the front and connected with a lever 56 pivoted to the car upon a pin 58, extending through the sides of the car the lever having a spring 59 for raising it', the lever being convenient of access b v the operator.
From 'the foregoing it will be seen that all of the several steering devicesare under the ready immediate controlof the person seated within the car.
In the :front portion of the car is an engine 62, driving a shaft 63, which extends through thefront 15 of the car and has rigidly engaged with it a hub 64 carrying Vso vin an effective manner.

Fixed upon the shaft 78- besides the sprocket 77 are lother sprocket wheels over which are trained chains 85, connecting with other sprocket wheels 86, fixed upon 'the shaft 87,-and also fixed upon the shaft 78, are another pair of sprockets over which are chained chalns 88, running over sprocket wheels 89,fixed upon the ends of shafts 90, mounted in a circular support 91, held in a rigid position bythe lateral braces 93 at the front and re'ar braces 94.

Extending out from the sides of the car and l106 connecting them together at a point inward from the outerl rods 107 and connected with their outstanding ends are the braces 71 and 72 respectively, while fore and aft braces 110 and 111 connect between the posts 108, and the front of the car `10 and the vertical blades 21 and 22 at a point beyond the body of the car.
From the foregoing it will be seen that all of the several controls, starting, stopping, raising, anddirecting, either vertically or horizontally, are under the immediate and ready control of an operator Without leaving the seat and that the plates 95 and 96, in addition'to the rotatable landing wheels, form novel and practical means tending to im rove the performance of the machine.

In an aeroplane of the character described,
a car, a motorcontained therein, a propeller v actuated by said motor, substantially boxlike lifting planes above said car, a horizontal rudder pivotally engaged at the rear of saidaeroplane, a vertical rudder fixed upon the upper sides of said horizontal rudder, a transverse shaft in said car, cable drums on said shaft, a hand wheel foroperatmg said shaft, and cables connecting said drums and said rudders for operating the same, levers pivoted to the car, springs controlling said levers, and cables secured to said leversand the horizontal rudder, means for operating said lifting planes from the motor, brackets in said car, and a clutch lever sliding in said brackets for controlling said means for operating the lifting planes from the motor.
