Specification of Letters Patent. Application-filed March 29, 1907. Serial No. 365,378.
To all whom itmay concern. 4 Be it known that I, C INTON S, SHUGART,
a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Fairmount, in the county of Grant and --State of Indiana have invented new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Barrels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a knockdown barrel or other receptacle, and relates. more particularly toa locking device for connecting the ends of the wire hoop or other bind ing element.
' The invention has for one of its objects to I improve and simplify the construction of devices of the character referred to so as to be comparativelyeasy and inexpensive to manufacture and whereby the'ends of the wire hoops or equivalent members can beeasily locked and unlocked for setting up or knocking down the barrel.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a locking member for connecting the looped ends of the binding wire or hoop together, one corner of the member being bent laterally to. engage the wire for holding the member in locked position, the wire itself operating on the locking member to hold the hooked shaped corner in locking engagement.
With these objects inview and others, as will apgear the description proceeds, the
invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described lxerema? r and set forth with particularity In'the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one of the embodiments of the in-- vention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of'a barrel to which the improved locking members are applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged front view of one of the members showing it in locking position.

Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the present instance, I have elected to.
illustrate the invention in connection-with a knockdown barrel, but it is obvious that .it may be used on other containers or receptacles which are employed for shipping products to market and'adapted to be L knocked down so-as to be convenientlypacked for returning to the producer. V

After the loop 6 is hooked to the locking device, as shown in Fig. '3, the said device is swung upwardly around the loop 5 as a center, thereby exert ing a draft on the wire 3 by drawing the ends thereof together. This throws the outer end of the member 7 into line with the end ofthe.
Wire having the loop 6, and by engaging the "tion, the loops 5 and 6 will'be a proximately" wire under the hook 8, the locking dev ce is prevented from swinging open under the tension on the wire. It Wlll be noted'that the loop 6 is considerably shorter than the length' of the member 7 and the inner end of the loop or the coiled part 10 is adapted to bear on the edge of the member having the hooks8 and 10, thereby tending to urge the member downwardly so that the hook 8 will be positively held in engagement. Furthermore, the looking member swings in a plane parallel with the surface ofthe barrel staves and it is adapted to be hooked between the body of the wire 3 and the outer surface of the barrel so that when the barrel is filled,- the tension on the hoop or wire will frictionally hold the locking member 7 against the outer surface of the barrel and thus contribute to a reat extent in preventing the locking mom or from being accidentally disengaged by contactwith adjacent objects. v

the advantages of the constructi n and of the method of operationwill'be re a r nt the principle of operation of the invention, '-together with the apparatus which I- now I claim 1szconsider to ,be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the ap aratus shown is merely illustrative and tiat such changes may be made when desired, as are within the scope of the claims.
Having thus described the invention, what 1. A knockdown receptacle comprising aplurality of parts, a flexible member permanently attached to the parts forconnecting the latter together, loops formed at the ends of the member, and a locking device consisting of a metal piece disposed fiatwis'e with respect to the outer surface of the receptacle and having an opening at one end for receiving one of the loops for permanent connection therewith, a hookat the same end extending longitudinally for det achably receiving the hook at the free end of the member, and a laterally extending hook adjacentthe opposite end of the piece and bent over from one of the long edges of the latter for engaging over the member at a point inwardly from the detachable loop, the free end of the member eytending the full length of the device and the detachable loopfbeing shorter than the device to permit the inner end of the loop to directly engage and press on the device to urge the latter in adn'ection to assist in maintaining the second hook in engagement with the member.

A knockdown receptacle comprising a plurality of parts, afastener consisting of a wire to which the parts are attached. a locking device comprising a member to which one end of the wire is hingedly co1mected,a hook at .one corner of'the member. a loop on the other end of the wire shorter than the length of the member and adapted to be placed over the corner for engagement with the hook, a laterally extending hook on the member under which the wire is engaged when the member is in locking position, the outer end of the loop engaging the first hook and the inner end of the loop being disposed between both hooks and bearing directly on the member at a: point intermediate the ends thereof to exert a pressure 011 the latter inadirection' to maintain the second hook in engagement with the wire.
