Description

Patented Apr. 10, 1923.
CHARLES EWELL, OF DYER, 'lE1\TI\TE'SSEE,-
BARREL.
Application filed May a, 1922' Serial,1o. 558,928.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that Crmnnus O.- EWELL, a citizen of the United States, "residing at Dyer, in the county of Gibson and State of Tennessee, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in barrels and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the heads may be effectively maintained in applied position without crozing the staves.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be readily and conveniently assembled by the user and wherein the staves are so formed and connected to produce a crozed barrel with a required bilge.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved barrel whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
* The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation with. a portion broken away of a barrel constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan of the device as illustrated in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of certain of the stavesl in extended or flattened relation.
My improved barrel comprises a plurality of staves 1 having adjacent end portions connected by annealed wire 2 or the like, said wire 2 being secured to each of the staves by a staple 3, said wire extending transversely across the faces of the staves. The marginal portions of each of the staves are disposed at a predetermined outbow or curvature so that when the staves are in flattened or extended relation the adjacent marginal portions of the staves are in overlapping relation as particularly illustrated in Fig. 3 but when the staves are assembled to form the barrel such marginal portions have close contact whereby the barrel is provided with the required bilge.
* In the initial production of the barrel the staves' 1 have similar end portions connected by a wire and whereby the connected staves can be bundled for shipment, it being understood that the barrel is assembled by the user. In this connection I do not wish it to be understood that I am providing a knock-down barrel as this is not the case as it is not intended that the barrels be employed for re-shipping but is primarily the purpose of the invention to turn out the barrels at the factory in knocked-down shape so that they can be readily and cheaply set up when they are to be used; In setting up the barrel the opposite extremities of the wire 2 is suitably connected as indicated at 4 in Figure 1 and the hoops a:
applied.
Associated with each end portion of the barrel is a head H and which head is maintained in applied position without the necessity of crozing the staves 1. Secured to the marginal portion of. the head H at predetermined points spaced circumferentiall v thereof are the extremities of an elongated plate 5 each of which being substantially in the form of an inverted U to straddle the adjacent end edge of the barrel with the outer side member or leg 5 extending between the stave 1 and the hoop a:
. and of a length to terminate inwardly of said hoop m. The extremities of the leg or member 5 is provided with an opening 6 through which a nail or other fastening member is directed;
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a barrel constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly w1e ll adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precisearrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a knockdown barrel comprising a plurality of stave s, a wire connecting the staves at each end portion thereof, hoops for holding the staves, retaining hoops co-acting with the staves, each of said staves having its longitudinal marginal portion disposed on outward curves, the adjacent marginal portions of the staves overlapping when the staves are in flattened relation, the extremities of the wires being free when the s taves are in flattened relation; said extremities being direct 1y connected one with the other when the staves are assembled to form the barrel.
2. As an article of manufacture, a barrel comprising staves, means for holding the staves in assembled relation, a head fitting within each end portion of the barrel, members secured to the head and bridging the adjacent ends of the staves, said members being spaced circumferentially of the head, the portion of the member bridging the end of the stave being substantially in the form of an inverted U, the outer leg of said U-shaped portion being of a length greater than the inner leg, means for securing the longer leg to the stave, and a hoop disposed around the barrel adjacent said head and disposed over the outer legs-of the members.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix. my
signature.
CHARLES O. EWELL.
