SLIDING-DOOR FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 1, 1907.
Patented May 19, 1908.
Serial No. 365,736.
To all whom it may, concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MOLINE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bancroft, in the county of Kossuth and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Sliding- Door Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved fastener for both hinged and sliding doors, and the construction, arrangement and operation of the same are as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face view of a sliding door, and a portion of a building or fixed structure, with my improved fastener applied as in use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective inside view of the fastening. Fig. 4 is a face view of the hinged doors provided with my improved fastener. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line 55 of Fig. 1 Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one form of the fastener.
In Figs. 1, 2, A indicates a sliding door supported by hangers and rollers 2 on a fixed overhead bracket 3. In the closed position, as shown it abuts a post or scantling 4 which is attached to the frame or side 5 of the building, or other fixed structure. The form of fastening shown applied in Figs. 1 and 2 and detached in Fig. 6 comprises two elongated plates 6 and 6 which are connected by a bolt 7. The ends of the latter are in practice screw-threaded and the plates screwed thereon and the ends of the bolt then upset to prevent accidental displacement of the plates. The bolt passes through and is slidable and adapted to rotate in the frame 5 and the post constituting part of it. The fastening is located in such position, or in such proximity to the edge of the doorway that when the longer arms of the plates or portions 6, 6 are adjusted in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the outer plate 6 will overlap the adjacent edge of the top A and thereby secure the same in the closed position. The inner plate 6 is provided with a handle 8 consisting ofa curved bar whose ends pass through the holes in the ends of the plate. The outer late 6 may be similarly provided with a hanc e. It is apparent that by this construction the fastener may be operated from the outside or inside. To operate it from the inside the handle 8 is seized and the fastener rotated one quarter around whereby both plates are brought to a vertical position whereupon the fastener is ulled toward the operator so that the outer p ate 6 is drawn back into a recess in the woodwork 5 or at least in such position that it will not interfere with the door A when slid to the left. Such retracted osition of the fastener is indicated by dotte lines Fig. 2. In this form of fastener it is thus requisite that the bolt connecting the two plates should be adapted to both slide and rotate in the frame 5, in order to engage it with or disengage it from the door A, as required for fastening or releasing the same.
When the door is closed against the scantling 4 as shown in Fig. 1, a rotatable fastening 10 may be swung over it. In Fig. 4, the fastening is shown applied to hinged bars B, B. In Fig. 5, the form of the fastening shown is provided with an outer handle 8. In Figs. 2, 3, and 5, the numeral 18 indicates a wedge secured to the inner side of the scantling, or doorpost, in vertical position, with the point upward, and in such relation to the plate 6 that, when the latter is turned down to secure the door, it slides down on the said wedge and thus presses the door tightly against the side or board 5. Besides this function, the wedge serves as a stop for arresting and supporting the fastening proper in the required horizontal position.
I claim:
1. The combination, with the door and door frame, of a fastening comprising parallel plates and a bolt connecting them, the said bolt being arranged to move transversely and rotatably in said frame, adjacent to the edge thereof, and a wedge affixed to the frame between its free edge and the bolt of the fastening, and in vertical position with the point upward, whereby it is adapted for the functions specified.
2. The combination with a slidable door and a door frame having a recess in its outer side adjacent to the rear edge of the door, of a fastening comprising two parallel plates, a bolt rigidly connecting the same, the inner plate having a handle and the bolt being adapted to slide and rotate in the frame whereby the fastening may be operated for engagement with and disengagement from the door, substantially as described.
