This invention relates tol door fasteners and has for the primary object .the provision of a simple and inexpensive device of this character which will be simple and convenient to mount and 5. which may be 'readily operated to secure a door in fully closed position against being opened from the outside of said door or may be operated tosecure the door in apartly open position against being fully opened o-r suflicient to permit entrance lli from the outside of said door, whereby ventilation may be .had through the doorway from the outside Without danger of an intruderentering With these and other objects in view, thisinventicn consists in certain novel vfeatures of con- 15. struction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter Vmore fully described and claimed.

vReferring in detail to the drawings, the num-v Yeral I indicates a fragmentary portion of a door and 2 indicates a fragmentary portion of a door frame. Secured to the door I and the door frame are attaching plates'3 and 4. These plates are provided with openings 5 to receive screws or like fasteners 6' for securing the attaching plates to the door and to the door frame. Formed on opposite edges and overlying the attaching` plates are retaining members or jaws 6. The jaws or members 6 of'each attaching plate extend in opposite directions to each other and provide therebetween a space on the lati-,aching plate to receive v(Cl.` 292-269.)
a connecting member. The connecting members for the attaching plates 3 and 4 are indicated by the characters I and 8. The attaching member J has a slot 8 to receive a rivet or like fastener 9 secured to the attaching plate 3 whereby the attaching member 'I may be positioned to parallel the attaching plate or be positioned to extend at right angles thereto and when in the latternamed position exposes the openings of the attaching plate so that the screws o-r fasteners 6 can be threaded into the door. The screws or fasteners are covered by the attaching member l vwhen positioned to parallel the attaching plate and when in the latter-named position is overlapped by the jaws or members E. The slot 8' permits the attaching member 'I to pivot relative to the attaching plate 3 and also to have a limited sliding movement relative thereto. Formed on one end of the attaching plate 3 are spaced hookshaped elements I0, the free ends of which are positioned to overlie said attaching plate 3. Formed on the attaching member 1 adjacent one end is an arcuately curved linger II of a length. so that its free end protrudes beyond one end of said attaching member 'I and is provided with pairs of notches I2 and I3. The notches of each pair extend inwardly from opposite sides of the finger II, the notches I3 being located adjacent to the point of formation of the finger to the attaching member 'I while the notches I2 are located adjacent the f'ree end of the finger. The finger may be employed by a person to obtain a grip on the attaching member I for the purpose of sliding or pivoting the latter and also the finger operates in conjunction with a isecuring plate I4. The attaching member 'I when moved endwise in one direction relative to the attaching plate 3, the finger is received between the hook-shaped members I0 to prevent the attaching member from pivoting and moving out of parallelism with the attaching plate 3. Y An attaching member I5 is pivoted to the attaching plate 4 and may be positioned to extend parallel with the latter or positioned to extend at right angles thereto. The `attaching plate 4 has fingers or jaws similar to the fingers Vor jaws 6 of the attaching plate 3 and which overlie the attaching member 8 when paralleling the attaching plate 4. Hinged to one end of the attaching member 8 is the securing plate I4 and 50 the latter has formed therein a slot I6. Also formed in the securing plate I4 are openings I'I and I8 they being in communication with the ends of the slot I6. The opening I'I is located adjacent the hinge which connects thesecur- 55 ing plate to the attaching member 8 and is of a size which will permit the nger I I to pass freely therethrough. The wi-dth of the slot I6 is such that the finger cannot move therethrough unless the finger is so positioned as to bring the notches I3 in position to receive the walls of the slot I6. The opening I8 is slightly larger than the slot I6 in width and oppositewalls thereof are adapted to extend into the notches I2 of the riger during a certain use o-f this invention and which will be hereinafter more fully described.
In operation, to secure the door in a fully closed position, the attaching member 'I is moved endwise to bring the finger I IY between the hookshaped members I0 and the attachingV member 8 is positioned to parallel the attaching plate 4 and the securing plate is swung to overlie thev attaching plate 'I with the finger II projecting through the opening I7. The notches I3 of the finger are then in alignment with the opposite walls of the slot I6 so that'the attaching member 'I may be slid in an opposite direction with the finger occupying a position in the slot I6 at some point between theopenings I'iand I8. The securing plate then is rmly secured to the attaching member 'l so that the door cannot be opened. Y
When desiring to employ this invention for securing the door in a partly open position, as shown in Figure 2, the securing plate is swung at an angle to the attaching plate 8 with the iinger II occupying a position in the opening I8,
the notches I2'then receiving the opposite walls of the opening I8. The door is then secured slightly `ajar from the door frame suflicient to permit ventilation and not far enough from the door frame asto permit an intruder to enter.
Referring to my modied form of invention, as shown in Figure 8, a slightV rearrangement of parts is shown from that disclosed by the other views of the drawings so that instead of apply` ing the securing plate on the door frame it may be secured to the door, that is, the attaching plate 4 is secured to the door with the attaching member pivoted thereto. With this arrangement a slightly diiferent construction'of securing plate 20 is' employed and is securedto the door frame and a nger 2I forms an integral part thereof and extends at right angles thereto. The ringer ZI operates in the slot of the securing plate I4 as heretofore described and when the door is secured in a fully closed position the fasteners employed for securing the attaching plate 25 t0 the door frame are overlapped thereby.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A door fastener comprising an attaching plate secured to a door, a second .attaching plate secured to a door frame', an attaching member pivotally and slidably connected to the rst'- named attaching plate and capable of Vextending parallel therewith or lat right angles tothe length thereof, a second attaching member pivoted to the second-named attaching' plateand'capable of extending parallel therewith or at right angles to the length thereof, jaws formedon the at# `secured to a door frame, an attaching member 'ipivotally and slidably connected to the firstlnamed attaching plate and capable of extending 1 parallel therewith or at right angles to the length thereof, a second attaching member pivoted to Vthe second-'named attaching plate and capable of extending parallel therewithror at right angles to the length thereof, jaws formed on the attaching members and the jaws of each attaching member extending in opposite directions to each other and adapted to overlie the attaching members when in parallelism with the attaching plates, spaced hook-shaped members formed on one end of the rst-named attaching plate, a curved Y finger formed on the first-named attaching member and when positioned to lie between the hookshaped `members prevents pivotal movement of the Erst-named attaching member, and means connected to the second-named attaching member to coact with the Vfinger in securing the door in a closed position or in apartly open position. 3. A door fastener comprising an attaching platesecured to a door, a second attaching plate secured to a door frame, an attaching member pivotally and slidably connected to the rstnamed attaching plate and capable of extending parallel therewith or at right angles to the length thereof, a second attaching member pivoted to the second-named attaching plate and capable of extending parallel therewith or at right angles to the length thereof, jaws formed on th-e attaching members andv the jaws of each attaching, member extending in opposite directions to each other and adapted to overlie the attaching members when in parallelism with the attaching plates, spaced hook-shaped members formed on one end of the first-namedV attaching plate, a curved ner formed on the first-named attaching member and when positioned to lie between the hookshaped members prevents pivotal movement of the first-named attaching member, a securing plate hinged to the second-named atta-ching member and having a slot and opening located at each end of the slot and in communication therewith and one of said openings being larger than the other to permit free passing of the' finger therethrough, said nger having pairs of notches and one pair of notches adapted to receive opposite walls ofthe slot to permit sliding movement of the liirst-named attaching member and the other pair of notches adapted to receive opposite walls of the largest opening for securing the attaching plate to the finger and at an angle to the second-named attaching member forrsecuringV the door in a partly open position.
