HENRY B. STARRETT, OF CLINTON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE A. KIES,
OF CLINTON, MICHIGAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
reteilted Feb. 18, 1908.
Application filed December I7, 1907. Serial No. 406.860.
I '0 all whom it may concern.'
Be itknown that I, HENRY B. STAERETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Clinton, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented an Improved Drawer and Drawer Support, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in part to a slidable drawer, vand in part to an extension slide adapted to support the same and to means for connecting or locking t'hem together, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section of a bureau provided with drawers and drawer supports according to my invention, one drawer and its support being shown closed and the others drawn out or extended. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one side of the drawer proper. .Fig 3 is a perspective view of one side of the drawer proper and the adjacent portion of the slidable drawer support. Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section on the line 4--4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of a bureau frame or case with myinvention applied thereto. Fig. 6 is a cross-section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
In the several figures of the drawing, A indicates the frame or case of a bureau or other similar article of furniture, which is in practice provided with slid'able drawers, B indicates the drawer proper, and C the slidable support for the same. As indicated in Fig. 5, the drawer support has parallel sides l which are connected at the rear by a back piece 2. The inner sides of the parts 1 are provided with central lengthwise grooves 3 andthe drawer B is correspondingly provided with central lengthwise side ribs 4 that are adapted to fit neatly and slide freely in the grooves 3. Itis thus apparent that the drawer B slides in the support C while the latter is in turn adapted to slide in the It is limited in this movement by means of the lugs 5 that constitute stops, the same being attached to the sides of the parts l, and engaging the front portion of the frame or case when the part C is turned out as shown in Fig. l. The drawer B may be turned out of the sliding support O so as to expose the entire space or compartment of the same, as shown in Fig. 1, and the'means for arresting it at that point are hinged stops 6 which are essentially L-shaped and pivoted to the front ends of the side portions 1 of the support C. Then these are in the vertical position shown in Fig. 3, and by full lines, Fig. 4, the nose or lateral projection 6a of the stops engages the front end of the ribs 4 of the drawer B. The latter is'provided with a groove 4a which extends between the ribs 4 and the front of the drawer as kshown in Fig. 2. It is not, however, absolutely necessary to provide this groove so long as the nose 6al of the stop 6 is adapted to engage the front ends of the ribs 4. To support and confine the stops 4 in place a guard plate 7 is applied over them and screwed to the end of the support C, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Thus by a simple construction, arrangement and combination of parts, I provide a slidable drawer and slidable drawer support for bureaus, desks, and analogous articles of furniture, which enable the drawer proper to be pulled out its full length and yet remain supported firmly in horizontal position. Vhen the drawer and drawer support are pushed back into the bureau or other article of furniture7 as shown in Fig. l, the front of the drawer ts into the same in the usual way or is in other words flush with the front of the frame or case, as shown.
I claim- 1. The combination with the frame o f a bureau or other similar article of furniture, of a slidable drawer support arranged therein and composed of parallel side portions l land a back piece which rigidly connects their rear ends, said support having longitudinal grooves in the inner sides of the parallel portions, and a slidable drawer arranged in said support and provided with ribs adapted to fitand slide in the grooves of the aforesaid support, said ribs extending only a portion of the length of the drawer, and stops pivoted to the ends of the drawer support and adapted to engage the front ends of the drawer ribs when the drawer is extended its full length substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a bureau frame, of a slidable drawer and a slidable drawer support whose parallel sides are arranged exterior to the sides of the drawer, the drawer and drawer support having corres onding ribs and grooves by which the i so that it may be removed from the drawer awer is suppoted alld adapted to slidde in support, as shown and described. t esu ort, an Ls a esto sivote to the frdit ends of the rwerpsuport and HENRY B' STARRETT' 5 adapted when in pendent position to engage Witnesses:
the ribs of the drawer and when swung out- F. E. RAWSQN, wardly on their pivots to release the drawer C. L. SILvERs.
