Be it known that I, JENNINGS ySooTT Mo- OOMB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dobbs Ferry, in the county of YWestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Book and Filing Cases, of which the following is a specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which forms a part of the same.

This invention relates to sectional book and filing cases and more particularly to a section or a unit of such filing or book case.

In the accompanying drawings showing illustrative embodiments of this invention and in which the same reference numeral refers to similar parts in the several iigures, Figure 1. is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section of a sectional book-case provided with one of my separate units or sections. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the bookcase shown in Fig. 1, the shelf being shown withdrawn from the section and in its operative position. Fig. S is a vertical section of several sections of a book-case showing a modication. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through an extensible 'filing-case and desk showing my invention in operative position. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the filing-case shown in Fig. 4. In using extensible book-cases or filingcases, it is very desirable to have some ready means of supporting the'books or papers which are placed in the book or filing-case. In using for instance books of reference as dictionaries, atlases'I or encyclopedias, it is quite burdensome to remove them from the book-case to a table or some other suitable support and after getting the desired information return them to the book-case. This often necessitates walking some little distance from the book-case, provided a table or other support is not located adjacent thereto. Even in such case, it requires that heavy books be carried from the book-case. By my invention I avoid this unnecessary labor and waste of time by forming one of the sections of the book-case or filing-case with a shelf which may be instantly withdrawn and as readily pushed back into its inoperative position when its use is no longer desired. My sectional unit can be shifted from time to time as needed and be placed adjacent to books or documents with which it is most likely to be used.

In the illustrative embodiments of this invention shown in the drawing 1 is a sectional book-case of any improved manufacture comprising the detachable sections or units 2, 2 having doors 3, 3 of any approved form. I form my section or unit 4 to correspond substantially with the other units 2, 2 of the sectional book-case and provide it with a false bottom 5 for the reception of a slide 6 having a notch 7. In the upper portion of the unit or section 4 I place two curved grooves 8 (only one being shown in Fig. 1) in which slide the ends of the slats 9, 9 which may be mounted in any suitable manner upon canvas or other suitable material l() which will act as a hinge between the difl'erent slats 9, 9. These slats 9, 9 form a part of a shelf or table 11, which in addition to the slats is formed with a rigid section 12 to which the slats are flexibly connected. At either side of the rigid section 12 I pivot legs 13 (only one being shown in Fig. 1,) so that, when the shelf or table 1 1 is withdrawn from the section or unit 4 into the position shown in Fig. 1, the ends 14 of these legs 13 take inte the notches 7 of the slide 6 which is withdrawn from the false bottom 5 of the section 4 for this purpose.

My unit or section 4 is provided with a door 15, so that books or other material may be placed in the section 4. I/Vhen the shelf or table 1 1 is in its inoperative position in the section 4, the slide 6 is concealed within the false bottom 5 and the shelf or table 11 is concealed by the outer surface of a ledge 16 a portion 17 of which serves as a stop to prevent books or other material from sliding off of the table. When the slide and shelf arc in their inoperative position, my section or unit has substantially the saine appearance as the other sections 2 of the book-case. It is to be understood of course that the flexible slats 9, 9 will, in the inoperative position of the parts, lie in the vertical portion of the grooves 8. To prevent the shelf from heilig entirely withdrawn from the section or unit 4, I use a stop-pin 1S on the last slat 9 which is adapted to contact with a surface 19 carried by the section 4.

The section 4 may be shifted in the bookcase from time to time as it may be desired to place the shelf or table 11 adjacent to that section containing the books of reference, or any other books which it may be desired to merely inspect without removing them perlocated in the filing-case. As shown in 1 section 48 is of just sufficient capacity to hold manently from the book-case. Fig. 1 the section 4 is located adjacent to a section 2() having pigeon holes 21, 21 in which for example, dictionaries or other books of reference may be placed. It is to be understood however, that a closed section such as 2, may be placed above the unit or section 4 and that this section 4 may occupy any other position in the book-case which may be found to be expedient. hen mounted on lower level than that shown Vin Fig. 1, the shelf or table may perform the function of a desk in addition to supporting any books which may be placed upon it, from time to time. Instead of forming my unit or section so that it is adapted to support boohs in the space 22, Fig. 1, I may form it so that this space may be used for filing papers or any other' suitable material.

In Fig. 3 I have shown a plurality of sections 23, 23 and a section 24 provided with a false bottom 25 and with grooves 26, 26 eX- tending above and below the false bottom 25. I provide slats 27, 27 having ends adapted to slide in the grooves 26, 26. These slats are secured together by canvas or some other suitable means such as 28 and form a part of a shelf or table 29 which is also provided with the rigid portion 30 upon which are pivoted two legs 31 (only one being shown in Fig. 3) the lower end 32 is adapted to engage in a notch or recess 33 in a slide 34 mounted beneath a false bottom 35 in a section 36. VVhen the shelf or table 29 is in its inoperative position the slats 2,7 extend beneath the false bottom 25 of the section 24 andthe slide 34 is concealed beneath the false bottom 35 of section 36, the legs 31 being also concealed in the upper portion of the section 24. In this form I mount a drawer 37 in the section 24 which is readily accessible when the shelf or table is in its inoperative position. It is further to be noted that in this construction the slide 34 is preferably, but not necessarily mounted on another section of the book-case. My invention is also adapted to be used with filing-cases and with cases which are provided with desk sections.

In Fig. 4, 38 is a filing-case formed of different sections or units 39, 40, 41, the section 39 being provided with a drawer 42, and the sections 40 and 41 with drawers 43, 43. Above the section 39 I have shown a desk section 44 provided with the ordinary pigeon holes 45, 46v and with a hinged cover 47 which is adapted to let down into the position shown in Fig. 4. Immediately above this desk section I may mount my detachable uni-t or section 48, although it is to be understood of course that my section may be elsewhere In this form the a shelf or table 49. This table may be formed of any suitable construction, but I preferably form it of slats 50, 50 secured together by means of canvas or other material 51 to act as a hinge between the dierent slats; I also provide the table with a rigid portion 52 having at the end a cover piece 53 which is adapted to close the section 48 when the table 49 is' in its inoperative position. Upon the end ofthe table I pivot legs 54 (only one being shown in the figure), the free end 55 adapted to rest upon the cover 47 of the desk section 44 when the table 49 is in its operative position as shown in Fig. 4. The ends of the slats 50 are adapted to be guided by the grooves 56 in the same manner as shown for instance in Figs. 1 and 3.

Having thus described this invention in connection with the several illustrative embodiments thereof, to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.

1. A section or unit for sectional bool; or filing cases having a shelf or table and a slide mounted within the same, and supporting means carried by the shelf or table and adapted to cooperate with the slide.

2. A section or unit for sectional book or filing cases having a shelf or table and a slide mounted within the same, and supporting means carried by the shelf or table and adapted to cooperate with the slide, the sec'- tion or unit also adapted to be used as an ordinary bookecase or filing-case section.

3. A unit or section for sectional book or filing case provided with a false bottom, a slide mounted beneath the false bottom,.a shelf or table mounted in the upper portion of the section or unit, the main portion of the unit being adapted to act as an ordinary sec'- tional book-case, and supporting means carried by the table and adapted to operate with the slide.

4. A section or unit for sectional book or filing case comprising a section of substantially the same contour as the other sections of the case, a false bottom in the section, a slide mounted beneath the false bottom, the section provided with grooves, a shelf or tab-le adapted to coperate with grooves in the section, legs carried by the table and adapted to cooperate with the slide, and a door.
