NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK L. SMITH, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO OLDS MOTOR WORKS, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN, `A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
.ADJUSTABLE STRAP-SEICURING CLIP FOR VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed March 18.1907. Serial No. 362.972.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of Michi an, have invented certain new and usefu Improvements in AdjustableStrap-Securing Clips for Vehicles, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of the invention to facilitate the securing of packages, as, for instance, trunks, upon a vehicle, being more particularly designed for use in connection with automobiles.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of a rail secured to the deck or floor of the vehicle, and a clip or eye adjustably secured to said rail, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of an automobile body to which my improvements are applied; Fig. 2 is a cross section through one of the rails with a clip in engagement therewith ,and Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof.
A is the vehicle body, of any suitable construction, provided with a deck or flooring B.
C is a rail, preferably extending longitudinally of the deck, and a pair of such rails being preferably arranged arallel to each other at opposite ends of t e deck. These rails C are preferably of T-shape cross section having theopposite side flanges D D secured to the flooring, and a central vertically slotted web E depending through the floor.
F is the clip, which is preferably in the form of an eye, having the shank Cr adapted to fit within the slot E of the web E.
H is a head at the lower end of the shank Cr adapted to engage with the under face of the web E upon opposite sides of the slot therein. The rail C is provided at one end with an enlargement I of the slot E', which is of sufficient width for the insertion of the head I-I of the clip.
With a construction, as described, the clips, when engaged with therail, may be readily adjusted lon itudinally thereof by sliding the shanks along the slots E. When, however, the strap is secured to the eye of the clip, and placed under tension by a pull in a direction oblique to the axis of the rail, the clip Vwill be turned into a position where the head H will bind against the lower face of the rail, thereby frictionally holding the clip froml displacement. The rails C, in addition to their function of engaging the clips F, also form wear-irons for protecting the floor or deck of the vehicle.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. The combination with a vehicle deck or flooring, of a rail extending longitudinally thereof, and a clip longitudinally slidable along said rail when in vertical position, and adapted to frictionally lock against the rail when in oblique position.
2. The combination with a vehicle deck or flooring, of a longitudinally slotted rail, extending along said flooring, a clip having a shank extending through said slot, and a head at the lower end of said shank for engaging the under face of the rail, substantially as, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with a vehicledeck or. flooring, of a longitudinally slotted rail extending along and secured to said iiooring, and having an enlargement into said slot at one point in the length thereof, a clip provided with a downwardly extending headed shank, said shank being adapted to fit within said slot and said head to pass through the enlargement in said slot into engagement with the under side o-f the rail, substantially as, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with a vehicle deck or flooring, of a rail of T-shape cross section, having the web portion thereof centrally slotted, said rail extending along said flooring and being secured thereto, and a clip having a 'downwardly extending shank slidably ttingthe slot in said rail, and a head at the lower end of said shank for engaging the under face of the rail, substantially as, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony-whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK L. SMITH.
