GROSSBAR FOR rRAr/rwAY-rnAo'Ks.
Specification of Letters Batent.
Application filed November 1, 1916. Serial No. 128,888.
(GRANTED UNDER THE PROVISIONS OF THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1921, 41 STAT. L, 1313.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR DEVRIN, a subject of the Kin of Belgium, residing in Jemeppe-Liege, Be gium, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crossbars for Tramway-Tracks (for which I have filed applications in Belgium, Sept. 15, 1913, and Germany Jan. 14, 1914;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referance being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to tie rods or fastening devices for'rail-way rails and consists in the combinations and arrangements of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claims.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a cross-tie rod for rails which will allow of rapid and secure laying of the rails, and which may be readily disconnected for replacement or repair at will.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a device for securing the tie rod in looking engagement with the web of the rail and which device may itself be easily applied to or removed from position.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevational View showing the application of the device to a rail and F ig. 2 is a central sectional view thereof taken on the line 11-13 of Fig. l.
Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the different figures shown, 1 represents the tie rod, of which only a portion is shown, and which rod is constructed of durable metal and of substantially flat shape as shown.
The respective end portions of the rod 1 are formed witlrreduced and rounded portions 2, only one of which is shown, and the said reduced portion terminates in a flat head 9. The tie rod is applied in position to the rail by passing the head 9 through the block 7, as shown.
slots 5 formed in the turning the rod through an angle of ninety degrees. In this manner the tie rod is secured against displacement from the rail and 1n this position the rod is held against turning through engagement with the pavlng blocks or other form of paving that is employed between therails.
The means for holding the tie rod in position consists of a filler piece or block 7 that fits within the slot 5 andsaid filler piece is itself held against displacement from the slot by means of the pair of pendant blocks 8 that are pivotally connected to the middle In Fig. 1 only one of said blocks 8 is shown but it will be understood that there is another similar block on the other side of the rail web.
It will be understood of course that vari- Patented Dec. 6, 1921.
rail web 1 and then 7 ous changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts herein shown and I therefore do not wish to be limited to the present disclosure except as defined by the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is: i
1. The combination with a rail-way rail having a slot formed in the web thereof, of a fastening device therefor comprising a rod formed with a reduced portion and a head adapted to have locking engagement within said slot, and a device fittin in the slot against said reduced rod portion and holding said rod from displacement,. substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a rail-way rail having a slot formed in the web thereof, of a fastening device therefor comprising a flat rod formedwith a reduced and rounded portion terminating ina flat head end, said flat headadapted to enter the web slot and be secured thereto by turning, a separate filler piecefitting in theslot and disposed against the reduced rod portion and holding the rod against displacement, and ing the filler piece in position, as set forth.
3. A rail-way rail tying device comprising a fiat rod having reduced and rounded portions adjacent the ends thereof and formed'with' fiat headed ends, said reduced portions adapted to engage within slots substantially means for holdformed in the flanges of the rails and held from displacement therein by the rod-body and said fiatheads, and a device for holding the tie rods in position on each rail comprising 2 filler block adapted to fit Within the rail Web slot against the reduced rod portion, and a pair of pendant'inembers pivotally connected to said filler piece and engaging on opposite sides-"0f the rail web to hold said filler piece against displacement, 10
' as my invention, I have signed my name 1n presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR DEVRIN.
