Description

No. 878,545. PATENTED FEB. 11, 1908.
A. A. LOW.
CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 11,-1907.
ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW, OF HORSESHOE, NEW YORK.
CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed May 11- 190'7. Serial No. 373,116.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABBoT AUGUSTUS LOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to cutting implements designed to be carried upon the person to be used in emergency for severing flower stems, cord and other things relatively small in cross section, the object being to afford an implement that may be safely carried upon the person and manipulated without injury or danger to the user.
The invention consists in the special arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed specifically, distinguishing features being the means provided for locking the movable blade and for providing for the lateral support of the object to be severed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved implement; Fig. 2, is a top view; Fig. 3, a central longitudinal section; Fig. 4, is a top view with the movable guard removed; Fig. 5,
a side elevation showing the movable guard locked. Fig. 6, is a section upon plane of line 66 Fig. 4.
The knife blade 1c, and its shank or handle it, are integral. I
The pressure guard G, is pivotally connected to the shank k, by means of the fulcrum f, and is formed with a rear extension 9, which fits in the recess it, in the shank. A spring 8, attached to the shank bears upon this extension 9, and tends to hold the pressure guard G in its normal position.
The forward end of the pressure guard G, is formed with the wide thumb bearing (,I-, and its under or inner side is formed with the cutting edge.
The outer or forward end of the rigid knife blade 7r, is formed with a lateral extension or hook H, which is formed with a slot 76*, for the rece tion of the extreme outer end of the movab e blade G. In order to lock the extreme outer end of the movable blade G, within this slot 76*, I provide a sliding latch L, formed with a locking tongue Z, adapted to fit over and close the end of said slot. The latch L is mounted upon or forms part of a slide Z which is dovetail in cross section and fits in a dovetail groove 75, formed in the back of the knife blade 7c.
A spring m countersunk in the blade 76, tends to hold the slide Z, in a position in which it may be set by frictional contact. A shoulder l, on the end of the slide acts as a stop to limit the forward movement of the slide when said shoulder is brought into contact with the end of the spring m.
In order to afford support for the object to be severed during the cutting operation, I provide each blade with a lateral extension. Thus the rigid knife blade 7c, is formed with the standard 7r, formed with the roughened bearing surface 76'', which is parallel to the cutting edge of said blade 7r, while the movable blade 9, is formed with the standard 9', having the roughened bearing surface 9, which is parallel to the cutting edge g.
The bearing surface 7c, is formed with the openings 7r for the reception of the studs 9, when the movable guard is pressed downward, and act as guards to hold a flower stem in position during and after the cutting operation.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In an implement of the character designated, the combination of a rigid knife blade and shank formed integral therewith, a movable blade pivoted to said shank and formed with a rear extension, a spring bearing on said rear extension, and a lateral guard on said movable blade formed with a bearing surface parallel to the cutting edge of said blade for the purpose described.
2. In an implement of the character designated, the combination of a rigid blade and shank formed integral therewith, a movable blade pivotally connected to the shank, and formed with a rear extension, a spring bearing against said rear extension, an extension on the forward. end of the rigid blade formed with a groove for the reception of the end of the movable blade, and a slide on said knife blade adapted to lock the end of said movable blade in said groove, for the purpose described.
3. In an implement of the character designated, the combination with a rigid knife blade and a shank formed integral therewith,
a movable blade pivotally connected to the surface parallel to the edge thereof, for the shank and formed With a rear GXtGIlSiOIi, a purpose described.
sprin bearing on said rear extension, a at Y eral guard on said stationary knife blade ABBOT AUGUSTUS formed With a bearing surface parallel to the Witnesses:
cutting edge thereof and a lateral bearing on D. W. GARDNER, said movable blade formed with a bearing GEO. WM. MIATT.
