Description

0; W. JOHNSON. DOUBLE BLADBD TOOL. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 18, 1909.
Patented Dec. 13,1910.
621 M Inventor:
J1; images- To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, OSCAR W. JOHNSON,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofHackensack in the county of Bergen "and Stateof New Lfersey, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Donble-Bladed Tools, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to that class of tools, @or implements, mostly knives of some sort, which are provided with a double or double-pointed blade and the object of my in- I, vention is to provide such an im lement, or tool, with a double-pointed blade in which 1 one of the points remains concealed within the body or handle of the tool while the other pointof the blade extendsoutwardly from the body in position to be used 3 and so arranged that the blade may be easily and quicklyflturnedaround by the release ofua suitable catch so that one point or 5 -cutting edge may be substitued for the other. H .l/Vhile my invention is, perhaps, more 1 especially intendedto be used as what is {known as a desk knife for removing ink-- blots and blunders in manuscript, it is also 1 intended, and perhaps quite as largely, for use in quite a variety of implements among which maybe mentioned, hunting knives, clasp-knives, paper-cutters, chisels, and otherk'nives, tools, and implements in which A a blade projects as a continuation of a shank or handle. a a 3 As a hunters knife, the importance of my invention may be appreciated from the fact that thebreaking, or bending, of the blade may lead .to serious or fatal conse- 1 quences which would be instantly avoided (if a second blade could be at once substi- .tuted for the broken orbent blade. I i
In. ordinary use the purpose of turning the. blade around so as to substitute a fresh 1 cutting edge is to replace a dull blade with a sharp one, but in emergencies as above gindicated, the object is to substitute a whole blade for a brokenor bent one. This apfgplies to all the different forms in which my invention maybe embodied and whatever may be the :use to which the invention isapplied.
. In the accompanying v drawing I have shown my invention in the form of a desk knife, for simplicity of illustration.

DOUBLE-BLADED TOOL.
Patented Dec. 13, 1910. Serial No. 518,387.
Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a detail showing one side plate removed to display the locking catch.
Same letters indicate similar parts in the different figures.
A, is the handle, preferably formed of two side-pieces or plates, a,;a, preferably held together by the rivets b, b, b.
B, is the double-pointed blade which turns on the rivet b, as a pivot, so that one cuttin surface projects as shown in Fig. 1, in ful lines, while the other cutting surface or point remains covered and protected by the handle as shown in dotted lines.
0, is a locking catch which is preferably a slotted plate of hard rubber, or other suitable material, adapted to slide in and out of a the end of the handle, being held from turning by the nut c, which is held stationary between the sides of the handle by the rivets b, b which pass through the side plates a a, and presenting a flaring mouth cl of size and shape corresponding with those of the point of the knife blade sufficiently at its inner end, to receive and hold firmly the point of the knife-blade as shown. It will be readily understood that this double-pointed blade can be quickly turned, end for end, as indicated by the brokenlines in Fig. l, by simply sliding back the catch 0, enough to release the point of the knife-blade and then turning the blade by hand. This same construction, with a difierently shaped blade will apply to all the uses above indicated, it being understood that in each case the shape of the blade will conform to the uses for which it is intended.
I claim A double-bladed tool consisting of a suitable handle, a double-pointed blade, pivoted between its endsthereinx and a holding device for the pointof the inner end of said blade which consists of a slotted plate with flaring mouth locatedbetween the side pieces of the handle and a nut located in the slot of said plate and engaged between the handle pieces, whereby said plate is adapted to slide and release said point.
