UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. MGKIERNAN AND ELMER A. PATRICK, OF SHA RPSB URG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO EDWARD A. LAURENCE, OF B IC'L'LEVU ll, 1 ENNSYLVA NlA.
SHOW-CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed April 8, 1907. Serial No. 366.894.
' 'fication.
Our invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in movable display trays for counter or show cases, and the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereafter set forth.
It more particularly relates to the arrangement of such trays for use in connection with counter or show cases fitted with sliding doors for access to the interior thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing a show case fitted with two of our trays, one of said trays being shown in its normal, inclined position while the other is shown drawn back into its horizontal position; Fig. 2 is an end view of a show case showing our tray in its normal, inclined position while Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the tray in its horizontal position, and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of the tray and its supporting bail.
The following is a description of the drawings :1 is a show or counter case of any suitable design, here shown as a conventional curved front case, fitted with sliding doors, 2-2, at the rear thereof of any known design.
33 are movable display trays, intended to normally maintain the position shown in Fig. 2 for the display of goods or articles of sale on the top surface thereof, but also adapted to be retracted by the hand bf the salesman or clerk into the horizontal position shown in Fig. 3.
44t are suitable casters or other antifriction members attached to the under face of said tray 3 near the front thereof and. intended to travel on the bottom 5 of the show case 1, thus facilitating the movement of the tray from its normal to its horizontal position and vice versa. Transverse of the under face of the tray 3 and attached thereto by any convenient means, near the rear of said tray is a metal strip 6 having integral therewith two or more pairs of ears 77 which may be bent toward each other as shown in Fig. l to pivotally secure to the tray the horizontal portion of the bail or other support 8. Said bail is bent at right angles to its horizontal central portion to form the legs 9-5) which end in angularly bent portions ].01O engaging screw eyes 11 11 fixed to the bottom of case 1. \Vhen the tray is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 2, the bail is arranged so that the legs 99 incline forwardly and upwardly time maintaining the tray in that position without the provision of a catch or look to secure the same. Then so arranged it will readily support the weightof the goods loaded on the tray without danger of falling into its horizontal position. It is evident that when the sliding door 2 is open the tray may be placed in either its normal or horizontal position.
lVhen goods are to be placed on the tray and the showcase dressed for display, the door 2 is slid open and the tray drawn back to its horizontalposition as shown in Fig. 3 and the articles to be displayed placed thereon. The tray is then pushed forward and upward until it assumes its position shown in Fig. 2 where the goods are conveniently and effectually displayed to customers. The door may be shut when the tray assumes its normal po sition. \Vhen the tray is in its horizontal position, it prefm'ably extends outside the case as shown. to facilitate the removal of goods.
It is evident that several different forms of pivotal attachment of the tray to the show case may be substituted for that shown, all of which are within the scope of our invention but the arrangement shown has worked very satisfactorily in practice and we therefore illustrate it as a desirable form.
Many changes in the various portions of the construction. will occur to those skilled in art, all of which we claim as included within the scope of our invention.
We therefore claim broadly stantially horizontal position, substantially In a show case, a sliding door, a tray as and for the purpose set forth. mounted to slide on the bottom of the case Signed at Pittsburg Penna, this 28th day and a bail having its ends pivoted to the bot I of March 1907.
