the United States, resiiingat San Francisco, in the'county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in trunk-protectors, the object of the invention being to provide devices to be attached to the corners or edges of-a trunk to protect the frame of the trunk from injuriousshocks and jars and from twists and strains and to reduce the danger to the contents of the trunk furthermore, to avoid cutting, scratching, scoring, or otherwise marring or oisfiguringof trunks when one or more are piled upon others, one whichwill permit of the protective portion of the device being readily removed and replaced when worn out, and which will permit of the levice being secured directly to the solid reinforcedv corners of the trunk instead of through the si-iies of the weaker portion of the structure.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a trunk equipped Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective of one of the devices detached. Fig. 3 is .a sectional view of the device. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the casting, the rubber boss being removed. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of another form of the protector.
Referringto the drawings, 1 represents a hold er, of brass or other suitable metal, having three inner surfaces each at right angles to the other two, and thus being adapted to fit snugly against the side, end, and bottom of a trunk. In the corner formed by said surfaces the holder is shaped to form a hollow threaded cylindricalextension 2, in which is contained a rubber boss 3, having a contracted thread portion 9 screwed within the extension 2 and having an annular shoulder 10 abutting against the circular edge of said extension. The inner surface of the contracted threaded portion of the boss is adapted to abut against the corner of the trunk and provides a protector therefor. After the rubber boss is screwed into the ex tension it is firmly secured therein by means of screws 5, screwed through the side of the extension and into the boss. itself is secured to the trunk by means of screws passed through screw-holes 4 said screw-holes being so arranged that the screws passing therethrough enter'the sides and the bottom of the trunk'atthe ends and 1011 gitudinally therein, so as not to penetrate any thin wood. In otherwords, the screws enter the sides and bottom of the trunk lengtliwise instead of transversely. Moreover said screw-holes are so arranged that the screws through adjacent edges of the protectordo not interfere with each other in crossing.
in the modification ofthe inventionshown in detail in Fig. 5 the casting 6 is provided with only two sides at right angles to each other, and adapted to be secured .to' two adjacent surfaces of the box. ln'this case also there is provided a rubber boss 8, screwed into the casting and securedloy the screws 7, saigl rubber boss also having the annular shoulder 10.
The rubber boss, having the annular shoulder andscrewed into the threaded casting, permits of the protruding portions of the boss being made of sufficient size to afford protection to the trunk without unduly increasing the size of the metal holder- 1. Moreover, since the rubber boss enters the holder from the outside it can be'detached and replaced at will, the holder remaining secured in its original position on the trunk, so that by supplying additional bosses to replace those that are worn out the device can be used indefinitely; The portion of the boss entering .the metal holder can be vulcanized to a greater degree than that on the outside, so as to render it firmer and more rigid and provide'a more secure fastening in the holder, while at the same time the exterior portion has greater resiliency.
Ne claim 1. A "trunk-protector comprising a metal holder having holes by which it can be attached to a trunk, and having a hollow threaded extension, and a threaded rubber boss secured in said extension and having a shoulder abutting against the edge of the holder, substantially as described.
2. A trunk-protector comprising a metal holder having holes by which it can be attached to a trunk, and having'a hollowinet-al holder into said rubber boss, 'substan tially as described.v

A trunk-protector comprising ametal I holder having three sides arranged to lie closely" against the' sides of a-, trunk at a cor: ,ne'r thereof and having a'hollow threaded ex tension, said sides having holes by which the I holder ca b attached to the sides of the mg a shoulder abutting against the edge of theholder, substantially as described.
6. A' trunk-protector comprising a metal holder having three sides "arrai'iged to lie closely against the sides of a trunk at a corner thereof and having a" hollow threaded extension, said sides having holes by which the holder can be attached to the sides of the trunk, said holes'in adjacent sides of the support being arranged so that screws therethrough wass eachother, and a threaded rubber boss secured in said extension and having a shoulder abutting against the edge of the holder, substantially as described.
