Description

WILLIAM s; nrvvns, or ANDERSON, SOUTH oARonnvn SHINGLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13,1966.
Application filed May 16, 1906- Serial No. 317.116.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. DIVVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the'county of Anderson and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shingles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relatlon to new and useful improvements in shingles; and it essentially consists of a shingle provided with means by which it may be connected or locked to one side of a corresponding shingle.
The object of my invention is the production of a shingle of this character that is sim 1e and economical in construction, efficient 1n use, will answer all the purposes of any of the more complicated shingles of this character, and is absolutely waterproof.
With these ends in view my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as set forth in the specification and claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like parts are designated by like characters throughout the several views, Figure 1 is aperspective view of two shingles locked or connected together at their adjacent sides, the opposite sides of said shingles broken away. Fig. 2 is a lon itudinal sectional view of two ofmy shingles ocked or connected together at their adjacent sides, their opposite sides partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a modification of my invention, showing two shingles locked together at their adjacent sides, their opposite sides partly broken awa My invention is described as follows: The numeral 1 re resents my invention, which consists of 'loc ing two shingles 2 and 3 together at their ad'acent sides. The opposite sides of said shing es are shown broken away. (See Figs. 1 and 2.) Said shingles are made of sheet-iron, tin, or other such waterproof material and are of identical construction. When in use, said shingles are connected or locked together at their opposite sides. Said piece 2 is constructed near one of its sides to turn obliquely upward for a short distance, forming an oblique shoulder 4, then inward horizontally, forming an inwardly-extendin horizontal part 5, then obliquely downwar and obli uely upward, forming an oblique downwar ly-extendin lip 6, then inward to about midway of sai outwardly-extending horizontal part 5, contiguous with the under face thereof, forming an inwardly-extending horizontal part 7. The side of said piece is then turned outward a ain and terminates in a horizontal outwar lyextendin extension 8. Said shingle 3 is constructs near its inner side with an oblique shoulder 9, the upper face of which preferably conforms with the under face of said lip 6 of said shingle 2. Said shingle 3 then extends horizontally outward and is bent back on itself a short distance, providing a horizontal outwardly-extending ton ue 10, which is bent downward and outwar to form a horizontal outwardlyextending extension 11, which terminates at its inner end in an oblique upwardly-exte'nding lip 12. Said extension 1 l is also provided about midway of its width and on its upper face with a horizontal vertical rib 12. The end of said shingle 2 broken away, which I will term the outer end, is similar in construction to the end of said piece 3 above described, whichl will term the inner end, and the outer end of said piece 3 is similar inconstruction to the inner end of said piece 2.
When in use, the said shingle 3 is secured to the roof or other place to be shingled, when said shingle 2 is brought into position by passing said horizontal outwardly-extendin extension 8 thereof between the under an upper faces, respectively, of said horizontal outwardly-extending tongue 2 and said horizontal outwardly extendin extension 11. The said lip 6 of said shin Fe bears against the upper face of the shoul er 9 of said shinle 3 and retains the shingle 2 in osition. The said horizontalvertical rib 12 0 said extension 11 of said shingle 3 also assists in securing said shingle 2 in position.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shingle, provided near one side with a shoulder 4r, outwardly-extendinghorizontal part 5, oblique downwardly-extending lip 6, 1nwardly-extendin horizontal part 7, and horizontal outward y-extending extension 8, and at its opposite side with a shoulder 9, horizontal outwardly-extending tongue 10, and a horizontal outwardly-extending extension 11, having avertical rib on its upper face about midway of its width, substantially as shoiivln and described and for the purposes set fort 2. A shingle, provided near one side with l at its opposite side side of said a. shoulder, outwardly-extending horizontal part, oblique downwardly-extending lip, inwardlv-extending horizontal part, and a hori= zontal outwar ly-extendin extension, and
With a s oulder, horizontal outwardly-extending tongue, and a horizcntal outwardly-extending extension, one
' shingle being adapted to be locked in the corresponding side of asimilar shingle,- siibstafitiall-y as shown and described I0 and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
I WILLIAM S. DIVVER. Witnesses JAMES L. BURLEY, JOHN A. AUSTIN.
Corrections in Letters Patent No. 835,818.
It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 835,818, granted November 13, 1906, upon the application of William S. Divver, of Anderson, South Carolina, for an improvement in Shingles, errors appear in the printed specification requiring correction, as follows: On page l, lines 3236, the sentence comprising the description of g Fig. 3 should he stricken out, and line 73, same page, the reference numeral l2 should he 12'; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with these corrections therein that the some may conform to the record of the case in the Patent (lfl'iee.
Signed and sealed this 4th day of December, A. D., 1906.
