To all whom may concern:

Be it known that I, CLAUS I-I. LIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Envelop, of which the following is a specification.

rllhe object of my invention is to provide an envelop so constructed and arranged that it can not be readily opened by steaming the gummed flaps and which is designed to be closed in such a manner that it cannot be secretly opened by separating the flaps.

More particularly it is my object to provide an envelop so constructed and arranged that a gummed tongue may be fastened in such a position that it can not be steamed or otherwise unfastened without showing the effects of the unfastening operation thereby producing an envelop which can not be secretly opened.

My invention consists in certain details, in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l shows a plan view of the back of my improved envelop.

Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the back of my improved envelop with the top and bottom flaps open.

Fig. 3 shows a verticalsectional view of my improved envelop taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 shows a detail sectional view of the inner side of the upper flap showing the pocket formed thereon.

In the accompanyingV drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate generally the front side of my envelop which envelop is of the ordinary construction having the top flap 11, the bottom flap 12 and the end flaps 13 with the addition of the parts which I shall now describe.

Assuming that the bottom flap 12 is opened outwardly, I secure to the inner side thereof a tongue 14 which is extended through a slot 15 in the flap 12 and extends beyond the outer edge thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 2. cured to the inner side of the flap 12 on each side of the tongue 14 by means of adhesive material or the like. On the inner side of the upper flap 11 is a strip of paper or the like 17 which is secured along its edges to the edges of the flap 11 forming betweenits central portion and the Hap 11 a pocket. In the flap 11 is a slot 18 the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully explained. The flap 12 is gummed along its edge as is also the strip 16 and the portion of the tongue 14 which extends beyond the flap 12 with adhesive material 20.

In the practical use of my improved envelop the end flaps 13 are folded over against the front portions l0 of the envelop in the ordinary way as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The adhesive material 20 on the flap 12 and the strip 16 is then moistened and the flap 12` is folded over and its edges are pressed against the edges of the flaps 13 thus securing together the flap 12 and strip 16 and the flaps 13. The flap 11 is then folded over with its central portion received beneath the tongue 14 and between said tongue and the central portion of the flap 12 as shown in Fig. 1. The adhesive material on the free end of the tongue 14 is then moistened and said free end is inserted through the slot 18 and into the pocket formed between the flap 11 and the strip 17 as shown in Fig. 3. The parts of the envelop are then pressed together until the free end of the tongue 14 adheres to the strip 17.

It will be seen from the foregoing description that it would be practically impossible to open my improved envelop without leaving visible signs thereon that the envelop had been tampered with. The tongue 14 could not be unfastened from the strip 17 by the use of steam without great difculty. The parts which it is necessary to use in addition to the parts of the ordinary envelop are few and are quickly and easily secured to the ordinary envelop. The addition of these parts does not detract from the appearance of the envelop.

I claim as my invention.
