Specification of Letters Patent.

To alt whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NORBERT BERARD, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Winchendon, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares and Bevels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in try-squares and bevels; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of tools of this character, and thereby render the same more durable and useful and less expensive.
The above and other objects, Which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved try-square and bevel. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view through the same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views showing two ways in which the tool may be used.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the body of my improved tool, which is composed of two side sections or members 2 3, between which are mounted three blades 4, 5, and 6. The blade 4, which is straight and rectangular in form, is riveted or otherwise secured, as shown at 7, between the centers of the two handle or body members 2 3, so that it projects at right angles therefrom and permits the device to be used as atrysquare. The two blades 5 6 are similar in construction and are adjustably mounted at the ends of the body 1, so that they may be secured at various angles to permit of the use of the device as a bevel. As shown, each of the blades 6 has one of its ends cut off at an angle of forty-five degrees, as shown at 8, and its opposite end is rounded and formed with a slot or opening 9, which extends longitudinally or inwardly to a point beyond the cenend secured to the center of the body,

The slot 9 is provided for the reception of a clamping-screw 10, which is mounted in one end of the body 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and has its head 11 countersunk in a recess or depression 12, formed in the body member or section 3. By means of these connections the end blades 5 6 are slidably and pivotally mounted, so that they may be adjusted at any angle with respect to the body 1. In the beveled outer end of the blade 5 is formed a circular opening 13 to receive a pencil of cylindrical form, and in the corresponding end of the other blade 6 is formed an oval or elliptical shaped opening 14 to receive a similar-shaped pencil commonly used by carpenters. By inserting pencils in these openings it will be seen that the device may be used as 19. compass for marking circles, arcs, and the ike.
The construction, use, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings the blade 6 is shown adjusted for use as a miter-bevel and the blade 5 adjusted for use as an ordinary bevel. In Fig. 4 is shown the manner in which the tool is used on angular or gable frames. When thus used, the blades 5 6 will be secured in the body in positions reverse to those shown in Fig. 1. The screws 10, as well as the blades 5 6, are readily removable from the body to facilitate such arrangement of said blades.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined by the appended claim.

The herein-described square and bevel comprising a body, a fixed blade having 0113 sa1 blade being at right angles to said body, a pair of blades at the ends of said body, each mitered at its outer end and provided with a fiencil-receiving opening near said end and I aving a longitudinal slot' extending from the opposite end, and set-screws in the ends of the body extending from the slots in the 5 end blades and forming pivot and securing devices for said end blades.
