To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK O. Onoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingman, in the county of Kingman and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tag or Check Retainers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to tag and check retainers or holders of that type suitable for attachment to boxes, crates, &c., which are to be returned to the shipper, and my object is to roduoe a device of this character which ili reliably retain or hold the check or tag from accidental displacement and yet permit it to be easily and quickly removed and relaced by a new one.

A further object is to produce a retainer of simple, stron durable, and inexpensive construction an which can be secured easily and quickly to the boxes or crates.

To these ends the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and or anization, as hereinafter described and c aimed, and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a box equipped with a tag or check retainer embodylng my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.

Referring particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a sheet-metal plate slit diagonally at its corners, as at 2, so that the portion between said slits may be bent upwardly toward the front side of the body portion to provide an u wardly-disposed flange 3, the end ortions eing likewise bent inwardly towar the front side of the body portion to provide inwardly-disposed hooks 4. Stamped out of the flanges 4 are tongues 5, which occupy the lane of and (project from the ends of the ho y portion an are secured by nails, screws, or rivets 6 to the box or crate A. In its up er edge near one corner the plate is recesse as at 7, and to the right of said recess the plate is bowed outwardly from the box or crate A, as at 8, so as to provide an intervening pocket.

9 indicates the tag or check of stiff paper or cardboard, corresponding in form to and of slightly-less diameter than plate 1, so as to be slipped down into the retainer, its lower edge being embraced by flange 3, and its ends by flanges 4, said tag or check being broken away in Fig. 1 to expose the recess 7 behind it,

The clamping device for preventing the tag or check from creeping upward and out of the retainer, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is made from a spring-rod, the same comprising a depending end portion 10, soldered, as at 11, on the flange 4 most remote from recess 7 a substantially horizontal portion 12 to bear against thefront side of the tag or check near its upper edge, the oblique arched portion 13,

extending from portion 12 rearward so as to overlie the plate and tag, and the terminal 14 to fit into the pocket provided between the bowed portion 8 of the plate and the box or crate.

The tag is adapted to contain the name and address of the original consignor and the name and address of the consignee. When the latter is ready to reship the box or crate, he prepares a new tag addressed to the original shidpper and containing any other matter desire or the original tag may contain on its back the address of the original shipper, so that all that is necessary for the reship er to do is to remove the tag, reverse it, anfresecure it inthe retainer, it being understood that the recess 7 is simply provided to render 1t more convenient to remove the tag when desired. It will also be understood that preliminary to such action the operator gras s the clamp and springs it upward until t e hook is disengaged from the ocket, its natural resiliency disposing it orward of the tag to permit the latter to be easily slipped in or out of the retainer.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A tag or check retainer comprising a plate provided with retaining-flanges on its front side to receive the tag or check and having a forwardly-bowed portion at its upper edge, and a clamping-arm adapted to bear against the front face of the tag or check and having one end secured to one of the retaining-flan es of the plate and the other end enga ed in 'Fhe cavity presented by the forwarddy-bowed portlon.
