APPARATUS FOR BREAKING PIG-IRON.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. TAYLOR, of Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Breaking Pi g-Iron and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for breaking pig-iron; and it consists in the parts and combinations of parts, as will be more fully explained, and pointedout in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in end elevation of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical section of same; and Fig. 3 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, looking toward the front of the apparatus.
1 represents the side frames of the apparatus mounted and bolted at their lower ends to a suitable base. Mounted in and between the two side frames 1 are the feed-rolls 2, 3, and 4, which latter are on a line with the last roll 5 of the roller table and constitupje, T e roller 3 is fixed to the shaft 5, which carries a gear-wheel 7 and a pulley 6, driven directly by a belt, while the rolls 2 and 4 each carry a gear-wheel 7, which mesh with gear-wheels 8, mounted on stub-shafts carried by the frame and driven by the gear on shaft 5. By this arrangement the rolls 2, 3, and 4 are rotated simultaneously in the same direction and at the same rate of speed, and thus operate to take the long pigs from the roller-table and carry them to the breaking-roll 9, which, as shown, is located on the rear side of the machine and rests normally with its top in the plane of the feed-rolls 2, 3, and 4. The pigs, which are cast in long bars, are thus fed into the breaker from the roller-table on top of the rolls 2, 3, and 4 and the breaking-roll 9 and under the clamping-roll 10. This clamping-roll 10 is journaled in a frame composed of two side levers 11, connected at their forward ends to the pin 12, rigidly secured to the lower end of the piston-rod 13, The levers 11 rest adjacent to the side frames 1 of the machine with sufficient space between them for the passage of the pigs, and the clamping-roll 10 is located between said levers in a position to engage the upper surfaces of the pigs in a plane above the roll 4. Mounted in the rear ends of the levers 11 is the pin 14, carrying the links 15, the lower free.
ends of which normally rest on the iron-shod block 17 and support the breaking-roll 9 in a plane with the feed-rolls 2, 3, and 4. The links 15 carry the pin 16, on which the breaking-roll is mounted.
With the parts arranged as thus far described with the rear ends of the levers elevated by the piston it will be seen that a space Will be left between the clamping-roll 10 and the rolls 4 and 9 for the passage of a pig, in the present machine the space being sufiiciently large to accommodate pigs as large as six inches square.
A cross-head 18 is secured to the pistonrod 13 just above pin 12 and is guided at its ends in guides 19, formed in the side frames 1. Secured on the upper ends of the side frames 1 is the cylinder 20, the piston 21 of which is secured to and carries the iston-rod 13. The admission and exhaust o steam to and from the cylinder is regulated by the valve 22, lever 23, steam- ports 24 and 25, and exhaust- ports 26 and 27. Secured to the front of the machine between the side frames and in front of levers 11 is the inclined shield 28 for guiding the pigs downwardly to their positions to engage the rolls, and 29 is a similar guard carried by the levers 11 for preventing the pigs from engaging the clamping-roll 10 at a point above the horizontal center of the latter.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The feed-rolls 2, 3, and 4 are run continuously while the machine is in operation,
thus feeding the long bars or pigs to the clamping and breaking rolls. The operator stands immediately in rear of the machine, adjacent to the valve-operating lever 23, and
when the end of the pig passes or reaches the breaking-roll 9 the operator depresses the lever 23, thus admitting steam to the upper side of piston 21 through steam-port 25. The downward movement of the piston and its rod 13 depresses the front ends of levers 11 until the clamping-roll 10 bears on the top surface of the pig, thus firmly clamping the tion for grading the broken metal.

After the clamping-roll 10 has been moved into contact with the pig the continued downward movement of the front end of the levers 11, due to the continued descent of the piston 13, causes the levers 11 to fulcrum on the clamping-roll 10, the longer arms of the levers being in front of said fulcrum. This turning movement of the levers 11 on the roll 10 elevates the links 15 and causes the breaking-roll to press upwardly against the pig and break the latter, the line offracture being generally on a line passing vertically through the centers of rolls 10 and 4. After; the short end of the pig has been broken its weight, together with the pushing force exerted by remaining portion of the pig, causes the links 15 and the breakingroll 9 to swing rearwardly or away from the apparatus, thus permitting the detached end of the pig to fall onto the plate 28, from which it slides into the trough, the latter being pivotally mounted on a central bearing 30, which allows it to be tilted in either direc- An 1 ward movement of the valve-lever 23 admits steam. to port 24 against the under side of piston, thus raising levers 11 to their original positions. The ports 27 and 26 are for the exhaust-steam and are so placed that the advancing piston cuts off the outlet for the eX- haust before reaching the end of its stroke, thus forming-a cushion of the steam remaining inthe cylinder. The machine built to the scale and proportion shown will break pig-iron as large as siX inches square and thinner pigs down to about two inches, which is-about as near as the clamping-roll can approaoh the feed-rolls.
It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing; from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the eX- ict construction herein shown anddescribed Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is

In a pig-brea (er, the combination with feed-rolls, of levers located above the feedrolls and carrying a clamping-roll, links depending from said levers and normally resting attheir lower ends on a support, a breaker carried by said links and means for depressing and elevating the front ends of said levers.
6. In a pig-breaker, the combination with feed-rolls, of a piston-rod, two levers, each connected at its front end to said piston-rod, a clamping-roll carried by said levers intermediate the ends of the latter, and a breaker suspended from the rear ends of said levers, the said breaker resting normally in a plane below the horizontal plane of the clampingroll.
7. In a pig-breaker, the combination with feed-rolls, of a air of levers, a piston-rod connected to the atter, a clamping-roll carried by said levers in rear of the piston-rod, links depending from the rear ends of said levers and a breaking-roll carried by said links.
8. In a pig-breaker, the combination with feed-rolls, of a pair of levers, means connected to said levers for rocking same, a clampingroll carried by said levers, links depending from said levers, and a breaking-roll carried by said links.
9. In a pig-breaker the combination with feed-rolls, of a clamping-roll, a support for the latter, means for rocking said support with the clamping-roll as its fulcrum, and breaking-roll suspended from said. support in a plane below the clamping-roll.
10. In a pig-breaker the combination with feed-rolls, of a clamping-roll, a support for the latter, means connected to the front end of said support for rocking same, the clam ing-roll forming the fulcrum on which said support rocks, and a breaking-roll suspended from the rear end of said support and normally in a plane below the clamping-roll.
11. In a pigbreaker the combination with feed-rolls, of a pair of levers, a piston-rod con nected to said levers, a clamping-roll journaled-to the levers in rear of the piston-rod, links depending from the levers in rear of the clam ing-roll, and a breaking-roll carried by said inks.
