SAWMILL APPLIANCE.
Application filed September 3, 1921, Serial No. 498,237.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJorrN MoLAR'rY, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at the county of -iilamath useful Improvements in Sawmill Appliof which the following is. a specification. 7 V
This invention relates to devices for use in saw mills, particularly to devices for handling the logs to be sawed, and has for its ob ect the provision of a so-called nigger which is mounted overhead in contradistinction to certain types of niggers which operate from beneath, my device being erated whereby to kick the logs traveling carriage employed.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a device of this character which will have great strength and power, means being provided not only for swinging the device laterally but also for causing up and down movement of the log engaging member or nigger.
An additional object is theprovision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in construction and installation, easy to operate, highly efiicient'in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illus trated in the accompanying drawings in which-- a Figure l is a cross sectional view through a saw mill showing my device in one posi tion, V
Figure 2 is a similar view showing my device in operation and illustrating two different positions of the movable parts,
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 33 of Figure l, V
Figure 4L is a vertical sectional view on the line H of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a detail view of one end of the upright cylinder.
power oponto the Referring more particularly to the drawin gs, the letter A designates a portion of a port the logs I. The letter J designates the usual inclined table upon which the logs are placed prior to their disposition upon the carriage.
In carrying out my invention I provide a support including bars 10 secured in spaced relation below the'bars D by means of suitablehangers 11. Secured upon the bars 10 are bearings12 within which are journaled trunnions 13 extending from the sides of an elongated cylinder lt within which operates a piston 15 carried by a piston rod 16.
Secured upon the bars D are bearings 17 within which are journaled trunnions 18 extending oppositely from a cylinder 19 within which operates a piston 20 carried by a piston rod 21. The numeral 22 designates the heads of the cylinder 19, these heads being formed with lateral extensions 23 which are provided with substantially I-shaped openings Qithrough which is slidable an I beam 25 which is of considerably greater length than the cylinder 19. The free end of the piston rod 16 is pivotally connected with the extremity of the extension 23 at the lower end ofthe cylinder 19 as shown at 26. Secured upon the lower end of the I beam 25 is a foot 27 formed as a plate-like casting provided with'spaced cars 28 which are secured to the free end of the piston rod 21. The lower surface of the plate or foot 27 is provided with plurality of teeth 29 and secured to an edge of the lower end of the I'beam are other teeth 30, all or" these teeth being detachable so that they may be replaced when worn or broken;
The cylinders 14; and 19 are provided with inletsand exhausts designated by the numerals 31 and 32, respectively, the inlets beingconnected with a control valve 83 having an operating handle 3a and provided with a supply pipe 35 leading from any suitable compressed; air or steam generating device. The arrangement of piping is the same as in the well known type of underneath nigger.
In the operation oi the device itwill be seen that when the control valve is manipulated to admit pressure to the cylinder 19 below the piston therein, the piston and rod forced downwardly into engagement with the log I nearest the carriage H. By then admitting pressure .to the cylinder 14: front of the piston therein, it will be apparent that the cylinder 19 and I beam will be moved toward the carriage, dragging the. to cause itto log or turning it over and over be disposed upon the carriage. Owing to the pivotal mounting of both cylinders and the specific connections of the respective pistons with the foot and with the upright cylinder, it will be apparent that there will be perfeet freedom of movement to permit all the operations necessary in handling the logs in a very rapid and efficient manner.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in. the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim: i
l. A device of the character described comprising an elevated support, a cylinder pivoted thereon and provided with inlet and outlet ports, a piston operating within said cylinder and carrying a piston rod, a second elevated support, a cylinder pivoted on said second named support GHClPiOVltlGCl wlth 1n- ,let andoutlet ports, a piston operating within said second namedcylinder and carrying a piston rod, the first named piston rod being pivotally connected with the second named cylinder, means for supplying pressure into either or both of said cylinders at either side of the piston therein, and a log engaging foot carried by the second named piston.
.2, A device of the character described comprising an elevated support, a cylinder pivoted thereon and provided with inlet and outlet ports, a piston operating within said cylinder and carrying a piston rod, a second elevated support, a cylinder pi voited on said second named support and provided with inlet and outlet ports, a piston operating with in said second named cylinder and carrying a piston rod, the first named piston rod being pivotally connected with the second named cylinder, means for supplying pressure into either or both of said cylinders at either side of the piston therein, a log engagelevated support, a cylinder pivoted on said secondg named support and providedwith inlet and outlet ports, a piston operating within said secondnamed cylinder carrying a piston'rod, the first named piston rod being pivotally connected with the see: ond named cylinder.
e ns fo p ies pressure into eitheror both of said cylinders either side of the piston therein, a log engaging foot carriedby the. second named piston, an I beam guidably slidable beside the second named' cylinder and rigidly secured to movable teeth secured upon the undersideoit the foot and upon one edge-of thebeam at the lower end thereof. K
A device of. tie character described comprisingan elevated support a cylinder pivoted thereon and provided with inlet {ma outlet ports, a piston operating withinsaid cylinder and carrying a piston rod, a second elevated support, a cylinderpivoted on said second named supportand provided with in let and outlet ports, a pistonoperating within saidsecond named cylinder aiidcarrying a piston red, the first' named piston rod bei ng pivotally connected with the second namedcylinder, means for supplying pressure into either or both of said cylinders at either side of the piston therein, a beam slidable along the second named cylinder and" a log enga'g ing foot carried by thebeam and'second named piston, said second namedcylinder having its heads formed with lateral exten sions provided. with openings serving as guides for said beam.
5. A device of the character described comprising a pluralityof elevated supports, a pair of cylinders pivoted for swinging movement upon said supports, a piston with in each cylinder and provided with apiston rod, means for u pplying pressure within either or both of said cylinders at either side of the pistons therein, onepiston rodbeing connected with the other cylinder,a beam slidable along one side of said otlier' 'cylinder, guide means for said" beam, and a toothed foot secured to said beam and connected with the other piston rod.
in testimony whereof I affix my signature.
