Description

PATENTED APR. 24, 1906.
W. E. MOULTON. FASTENING DEVICE FOR UMBRBLLA HANDLBS.
APPLICATION FILED MAYlQ, 1905.
WALTER E. MOUL'I'ON,
OF PLAIN CITY, OHIO.
FASTENING DEVICE FOR UNIBRELLA-HANDLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 190e.
Application iled May 19, 1905. Serial No. 261,115.
To all whom, it may concer/a:
Be it known that I, IVALTER E. MOULTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plain City, in the county ot' Madison and State ot Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices `t'or Umbrella-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to improvements in fastening devices for umbrella-handles, the construction and advantages oi' which will be hereinafter set forth, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation ot' a portion of an umbrella stati', handle, and attaching means, portions being shown in section to more clearly illustrate the invention 5 Fig. 2, a similar view at right angles to that shown in Fig. I, Fig. 3, a transverse horizontal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l Fig. 4, a perspective view of the lower portion ot' the staatl', Fig. 5, a similar view, the parts being shown in a slightly different position; and Fig. 6, a perspective View, partly in section, et' the retaining-sleeve or socket-piece.
The object ot' the present invention is to provide a simple and efficient lock for detachable umbrella-handles. As is well known, the cost ot' making a detachable handle is quite an item in the manufacture of umbrellas, and this invention provides a simple and inexpensive construction which nevertheless `is highly e'tl'icient in operation.
In the drawings, A designates the handle, which is bored out at its upper end to receive a tubular member or socket-piece B, which is `forced down into the handle, said socket-piece being provided at its upper end with a vertically-disposed slot or recess C. It is also provided with a locking pin or wire D, (best seen 'upon reference to Figs. 3 and 6,) which is placed to one side of the center ot' the socketpiece.
E denotes the stati', which, as shown in the drawings, is preferably ot' tubular form. The lower end thereof is cut away to one side ot' the center, a laterally-extending slot or recess F being formed in the stati' at the upper end ot the reduced portion. The cutting away et' the stati' and the lformation of the slot is a comparatively simple operation. The lower end of the stati' may thus be formed or shaped by two operations-first, a cut oi' the saw extending lengthwise or longitudinally of the stati', and, second, a cut extending transversely of the stall', or the operations may be reversed.
AThe cut-away portion at the lower end of the stai'l" stands out of alineinent with the spring-pressed retaining latch or member G, the lower end ot' which when the parts are properly positioned extends into the recess C, formed in the upper end ot' the tubular member or socket-piece. Said spring-pressed latch stands in alinement with the slot F, so that when the stati' is passed down into the socket-piece the cut-away portion permits the lower end ot' the statt' to pass beyond the cross-wire D. Upon rotation oi' the sta'il, when the parts are thus positioned, the wire passes into the slot F, the latch G at the same time entering the recess C. Vire D prevents longitudinal movement of the handle with reference to the socket-piece, and the latch G prevents relative rotation ot' the parts.
The construction, as will be noted, forms a simple and eflicient locking device for the handle and stati'. By placing the wire D to one side of the center 0i' the tubular member B there is less danger of the same becoming bent. Furthermore, a shorter piece oi' wire may be employed than if it extended diamet rically across the tubular member. Again, in view ot' the fact that the locking-wire D is located to one side ot' the center' of the member B it is necessary to cut away but a small portion oi' the lower end of the stati', and said end is not thereby materially weakened.
As socket-pieces and sta'tl's are made of standard size, the handles may be readily shifted from one umbrella to another or a new handle attached. whenever this may become desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In combination with an umbrella-handle, a tubular member or socket-piece mounted therein, said member being provided with a vertically-disposed slot in its upper end; a locking-pin secured in the tubular member, said pin standing to one side of the center ol" said member; a tubular stall' having a section ot' less than halt' its diameter removed from the lower end and provided also with a slot F extending laterally lfrom the cut-away por-L tion, and a spring retaining device carried by the sta', said device standing in alinement IOO with the slot F in the lower end of the staff, In testimony whereof have signed :my
whereby when the parts are properly posname to this speclieation'in the presence of tioned the pin Will pass into slot F, the retwo subscribing Witnesses.
taining device Will enter the slot in the upper WALTER E. MOULTON. 5 end of the tubular member, and the parts be Witnesses:
held against relative rotation and longitudi- A. K. SHAUOKq l nal separation. H. D. MOULTON.
