TIP FOR WHIP-STOCKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,129, dated August 18, 1896.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS WILLIAM BLUETT,'Of Big Sandy, in the county of Ohoteau and State of Montana, have invented a new and Improved Tip for Whip-Stocks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;

My invention relates to a metallic tip for whip-stocks, the said tip being adapted to replace the ordinary strip of buckskin or rawhide which is ordinarily applied as a means for attaching the lash to the stock, and which usually lasts but a short time. A further object of the invention is to provide a tip for whip-stocks, whereby a broken stock or a worn-out lash may be easily replaced by a new one.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved tip, illustrating a portion of a lash applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tip, the clevis being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the improved tip, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the clevis removed from engagement with the tip.

In carrying out the invention the body A of the tip consists of a metal tube, which is preferably made tapering, being largest at its inner or butt end. The inner or smaller end of the body of the tip is closed in any approved manner, and preferably a cylindrical cap 10is provided at the said forward or outer end, being integral with the aforesaid body, as is particularly shown in Fig. 3.- At the butt or base end of the body of the tip a series of projections 11 is produced upon the outer surface of the aforesaid body, ordinarily in circular order and these projections are preferably roughened upon their outer faces, as illustrated, and may be produced by simply striking up the material of the body from the inside in an outwardly direction. These projections 11 are adapted to afford a handhold for the operator in attaching the tip to the whip-stock, the attachment being made being introduced into a key-ring.

preferably by screwing the tip upon the stock, and to that end, adjacent to the afore said surface projections 11, a thread 12 of predetermined length is formed in the body.

Between the thread 12 and the cap 10 of the tip two annular ribs 13 and 14 are produced exteriorly upon the aforesaid body of the tip, and the space between these ribs is adapted to loosely receive a collar 15, and preferably the coilar is of less length than the width of the space between the aforesaid ribs 13 and 14. The collar 15 is provided at opposite sides with a boss 16, and in each boss a slot 17 is produced, the slots being at an angle to the tip and also at an angle to each other, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2.

In connection with the tip a clevis 18 is employed. This clevis is preferably made of a strong wire, which is bent upon itself at its outer or-forward end to form acoil or an eye 19, and the inner extremity of each member of the clevis, which is practically U-shaped in contour in its entirety, is provided with a 'fiattened surface 20, and upon each of the aforesaid flattened surfaces of the clevis, at the inner face thereof, a pin 21 is secured, preferably of angular or substantially L-shape construction, the inner members of the said pins facing the outer end of the clevis. After the tip has been secured to the whip-stock one of the pins 21 is introduced into one of the slots 17 in the collar 15 of the tip. The lash 22, which is provided with the usual wyw 22 at its inner end, and is placed upon the coil at the outer end of the clevis, entering the same in a manner like that of a key After the first member of the clevis is placed in position upon 'the socket the end of the clevis which was allowed to remain free is attached to the collar 15 by introducing the pin at that end into the slot 17 of the collar awaiting to receive the pin. It is evident that a new lash may be expeditiously and conveniently applied to. the tip at any time, and that the clevis has rotary movement on the tip; also that the entire arrangement is exceedingly light, durable and economic, and may be applied to any form of whip-stock.

Having thus described my invention, ,1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A metallic tip for whip-stocks, provided With a gripping-surface near its base, a thread adjacent to the said gripping-surface, and a collar mounted to revolve upon the said tip near its outer end, and a spring-clevis having a coil formed at one end and provided with latches at its opposite extremities, adapted for detachable connection with the aforesaid collar, as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with a metallic tip for whip-stocks,provided with a gripping-surface and a thread, and a collar revolubly mounted thereon, the said collar being provided With slots at opposite sides, arranged at angles to the tip and also at angles to each other, of a clevis of a spring material, provided With pins adapted to enter the aforesaid slots in the collar, and for removable detention therein, as and for the purpose specified.

3. The combination, with a tip for Whipstocks, having its outer end closed, and a collar mounted to revolve upon the said tip adjacent to the head, the said collar being provided With slots in opposite sides and the said slots being at angles to one another, of a clevis adapted to receive a latch, said clevis being provided with locking-pins adapted for removable engagement With the slotted portions of the collar, as and for the purpose specified.
