Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RIOHARD A. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Warren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVell-Operating Apparatus, of which the following is a specifica- 1 tion.
This invention relates to improved apparatus for operating oil, water, or like wells.
The invention resides particularly in the provision ofpeculiar operating mechanism, designed in its preferred adaptation for actuating the bailer or bailers in a single well or in a plurality of wells to elevate the liquid therefrom.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawin s, in which- Figure 1 is a side e evation of the operating mechanism embodying the invention- Fig. 2 is an end elevation. view showing the winding-drum and the bailing rope or cable connected therewith, dotted lines indicating the various directions in which the bailing-rope may be extended in order that the same may be connected with the bailer at one of a plurality of adjacent wells.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a drive-shaft mounted in suitable pedestals 2, and loosely mounted on the drive-shaft 1 is the driver 3 in the form of a driving-pulley. The pulley 3 is normally connected with a suitable motor, gasolene-engine, or the like, and is normally driven in the operation of the mechanism. Also mounted on the driveshaft 1 and keyed for rotation therewith is a winding-drum 4, upon which is adapted to wind the rope or cable 5, (see Fig. 3,) said rope or cable being connected with a bailer operating in a well. A brake-wheel '6 is also keyed to the shaft 1 and is located adjacent the drum 4, a brake-band 7, coacting With the brake-wheel 6, being normally held in engagement therewith by means ofabrake-lever 8. The weight of the lever 8, which is pivoted at 9 near one end thereof, is sufficient to hold the band 7 normally in engagement with Fig. 3 is a top plan the wheel 6, and said brake-lever 8 is connected at the end opposite its point of pivotal support with an operating device in the form of a pullin rope 10. The rope 10 passes about suitai e pulleys 11, and said rope is connected by wires or any similar means to a hand-rope or like part located at the well, the bailer of which is connected with the drum 4. Thus if the operating mechanism comprising the invention is so arranged as to be convenient to a number of wells the rope 5 is adapted to be connected with a bailer at any one of the wells for operation thereof, and for this reason the operating or pulling rope 10 may be connected by means of a number of wires or ropes with suitable operating means at each well to admit of convenient controlling of the mechanism by the operator stationed at any one of the wells. The rope 10 is not only connected with the brake means above described, but is also designed to control the operation of the driver 3. The driver 3, normally loosely rotating on the shaft 1, is adapted to be connected for rotation with the shaft by means of a clutch 12, operated by a suitable shifting lever 13. The clutch 12 maybe of any conventional or approved type, and is therefore not specifically described, save that it coacts with a clutch-band, (indicated at 14, as shown in Fig. 1 in dotted lines.)
The shifting lever carries at its upper end a sleeve 15, and a rod 16 passes through this sleeve and is slidable longitudinally therein. The rod 16 is provided with eyes 17 and 17*, located at its ends, by which it is connected with the pulling cord or rope 10, and these eyes form stops adapted to engage opposite ends of the sleeve 15 at a predetermined point in the movement of the rope 10 to thereby actuate the shifting lever 1 As is obvious, it is an important desideratum in the art to which the invention appertains that the operating mechanism shall be of a nature as simple as possible Without making necessary actuation of various operating devices. The rope 10 constitutes a single operative device connected with the brake and controlling the operation of the driver in actuating the drum. In actual operation if an operator at one of the wells desires to lower a bailer therein he pulls upon the hand-rope connected with the operating device 10, and the latter is pulled in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1. The initial movement of the device 10 raises the lever 8 and the brake-band 7, and the weight of the bailer is sufiicient, pulling on the rope or cable, to turn the drum 4, whereby said bailer lowers into the well. WVhen the bailer is lowered a suflicient distance, the operator, by releasing or slacking the pull on the rope 10 or operating device, permits the lever 8 to pull the band 7 downwardly, and the brake being applied the drum is prevented from further rotation. To raise the bailer, it is only necessary to pull the rope 10 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 until the stop member 17 engages an end of the sleeve 15, when further movement of the rope 10 in the same direction, the brake-band 7 having previously been raised, will cause the shifting lever 13 to be actuated, thereby clutching the driver 3 and the shaft 1 and causing the drum 4 to be rotated in the reverse direction to that before mentioned, raising the bailer and its load. Pull on the rope 10 in one direction is therefore adapted to release the brake and operably connect the driver with the drum, and the operating mechanism for this reason is simplified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1 The combination of a driver, a driveshaft, a drum operable by the driver and mounted on said shaft, a brake-band for said drum, a brake-lever connected with the brake-band, clutch mechanism on the driveshaft for connecting the driver with the drum, a shifting lever for said clutch mechanism, a pull-rope connected with the brake-lever, and a sleeve applied to the shifting lever and having sliding connection with the pull-rope aforesaid, whereby movement of the brakelever independently of the clutch-lever is admitted 0f.
2. In mechanism of the type described, the combination of a drive-shaft, a driver, a Winding drum, a brake for said drum, clutch mechanism on the shaft for operably connecting the driver with said shaft to actuate the drum in one direction, a shifting lever for the clutch mechanism, a pulling-rope connected with the brake and with the lever to control the operation of the brake and the clutch mechanism, and a sliding connection between said rope and the lever admitting of operation of the brake independently of the clutch mechanism.
