Be it known that we, ALLEN B. BOYER and 01m DAvIssoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Trees, in the parish of Caddo and State of Louisiana, have vinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Bailing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification. f.
This invention relates to well drilling apparatus, and especially apparatus for deep wells, such as oil wells and the like, and has for an object to provide actuating mechanism for the bailer cables, whereby the bailing reel is'placed away from the derrick and with means at the derrickfor controlling the reel, for winding, holding or liberating the bailer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a -bailing reel with a constantly driven shaft with the reel drum rotatable thereon and means actuated from a position at the derrick for connecting the reel with the shaft at times, or applying a brake thereto at times, or with an intermediate step releasing the reel from both of said controls.
With these, and other objects in view, the device comprises certain novel elements, mechanical movements, parts and combinations as will be hereinafter more fully described-and claimed.

Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved hailing reel structure, which forms the subject matter of this application, is adapted to be associated with any form of derrick, shown conventionally at 10, and operated from any type of prime mover, shown conventionally at 11, the latter driving the usual bull-wheel shown conventionally at 12. The power for driving the reel mechanism is taken from the shaft 13,which journals the bull-wheel 12, by means of sprocket 14 and sprocket cham 15.

The sprocket chain 15 engages sprocket 16 the hailing cable 22 is wound, oassing up to and over a pulley at the top of the 'derrick and downwardly to the line in the usual well known manner. f
It will be apparent that the shaft 17, connected as itis with the bull-wheel 12, is constantly driven, provision therefore must b e made for winding the cable uponthe reel, when it is desirable so to do for retarding the reel or holding it against movement when either of said conditions are desirable, or for loosing the reel, to permit the hailing apparatus to drop when that is found necessary. The means for positively rotatin the reel, for winding the cable, comprises a rum 23 associated with-an internal expanding clutch 24 of the usual and `ordinaryV type. This clutch is actuated by a lever 25 which in turn connects at its lower end with a Abell-crank lever 26 pivoted to the frame 18V trol, shown conventionally as the lever -29. As .shown in the-drawings the parts are set to clamp the clutch 24 within the drum 23. The movement of the lever 29, from the position shown at Fig. 1- to move the thrust bar, in the direction indicated by arrows at Figs. 1, 3 and 4, results in swinging the lever y 25 also in the direction indicated by the arrow at Fig. 2. The movement of the lever 29 lto the middle notch of the segment 30 releases the clutch permitting the reel to rotate freely upon the shaft 17 and the hailing cable to unwind. Any further movement l of the thrust bar 28, manipulated by llever 29 causes lever 31 to continue movement, 1n the direction indicated by the" arrow upon said lever at Fig. 3, communicating such movement to the hand brake 32, whereby' the hand brake is .tightened upon the drum 23 to retard the reel or hold it' stationary. lVith the lever 29lswung Vto the'limiteof its movement opposite that lshown at Fig., 1, the band brake 32 is applied an-df the reel held rigid. It will be noted, therefore, that there are three-steps in the control of the reel, one -in'which the clutch 25 Y lng or unwinding, and an intermediate step when both the clutch and the brake are released, leaving the reel free to rotate under the Weight of the hailing apparatus.
Having thus fullyidescribed our said in- `vention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a well rig including a derrick and a prime mover, of a hailing apparatus comprising a shaft constantly driven from the prime mover, a reel loose on the shaft, a clutch for connecting the reel to the shaft. a lever for operating the clutch, a brake to hold the wheel against rotation, a lever for operating the brake, a manually operated lever at the derrick, a rod extending therefrom attached tothe brake lever, a bell crank lever having one arm attached to the rod and the other arm attached to the clutch lever, substantially as set forth.
