Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it'known that I. LnsLIn M. DARROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oftheinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in that class of domestic appliances termed laundry implements upon which clothes are ironed; and it consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter explained, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

The object of my invention is to produce such an ironing-board as may be adjusted to any height and also one which will be handy and efiicient for the purpose for which it is designed. This object I accomplish by the peculiar arrangement and adaptation of parts herein fully described, and pointed out in the claims appended.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device, showing it as it'appears when set in position ready for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a fastening-catch. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of an adjustable supporting device. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of a hingeplate. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a slotted hinge-plate. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on a line 00 00 of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a top plan view of a catch device, showing a bumper attachment thereon. Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view of my improved ironing-board, taken on a line y y of Fig. l.

1 is the ironing-board proper, provided at I its inner end with pivoted catches 2, which work in collars 3. Said catches engage with the sockets of boxes 4, which are secured to the wall or other suitable place.

5 represents rubber bumpers fastened to the inner end of the board 1 and adapted to prevent the catches 2 from hitting and marring the wall, and they also aid in preventing the board 1 from shaking.

Fastened to the bottom of the board 1 at a suitable distance from the inner end is a plate 6, provided with an upwardly-projecting rim 7, a longitudinal slot 8, and downwardly-projecting side pieces 9, which said side pieces are provided with notches 10, the notches in one side conforming with those in the other.

11 is a hinge-plate having an upwardlyprojecting rim 12, two Outwardly-projecting lugs 13, and an angular shoulder 14.

15 is a bolt working in the slot 8 and extending down through the plate 11 and secured by means of a nut 15.

16 is a jointed leg or support having a horizontal portion resting on the floor and an oblique portion provided with a hinge-plate 17 i The operation is as follows: When it is de- I sired to raise the board 1, the nut 15 is loosened and the tongues 20 taken out and put into the notches 10 which are nearest the inner end of the board, and the bolt 15 moves along in the slot 8 until the lugs 13 again inclose the tongues 20, when the nut 15 is again tightened. If it is desired to raise the said board 1 still higher, the screws 19 may be loosened and moved up in the slots 18. To lower the said board, the above-described operation is just reversed. The support 16 rests firmly against the shoulder 14, thus adding strength to my device.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an ironing-board the combination of the board proper, means for securing said board to a wall, a notched plate secured to the bottom of said board at any desired place, a suitable support having an adjustable plate secured to its upper end, said plate being provided with outwardly projecting tongues, said tongues being adapted to fit into the notched plate aforesaid, and means for holding said tongues in engagement with said notches, as set forth.

2. In a device of the kind described the combination of the board proper, means for securing said board to a wall, the slotted plate 6 secured to the under side of said board at a suitable place, said plate being provided with notches 10, and a support pivotally secured in one set of said notches, as set forth.

3. In a device of the kind described the combination of the board proper, means for securing said board to a Wall, the slotted plate 6 secured to the under side of said board and provided with notches 10, the support 16, the plate 17 secured to the upper end of said support, the tongues 20 on said plate 17, said tongues engaging with the notches 10, and means for securing said tongues in said notches, as set forth.

4. In a device of the kind described the combination of a board proper, means for securing said board to a Wall, the plate 6 provided With the rim 7, the slot 8, and the side pieces 9 having notches 10, the plate 11 adjustably secured to the plate 6 by means of the bolt 15 and nut 15, the shoulder 14 on said plate 11, the lugs 13 projecting from said shoulder 14, the support 16, the plate 17 secured to the top thereof, the tongues 20 on said plate 17, said tongues being adapted to fit into the notches 10 and be held in position by means of the lugs 13, as set forth.

5. In a device of the kind described the combination of a board proper, means for securing said board to a Wall, the support 16, the plate 17 secured to the top thereof, said plate being provided With the slots 18 in Which are inserted the screws 19, the tongues 20 on the upper end of said plate, and means for pivotally securing said tongues to the under side of the said board, as set forth.
