UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MYRON MILES, OF GILROY, CALIFORNIA.
lRONlNG-BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,038, dated January 25, 1881.
Application filed May 28, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MYRON MILES, of Gilroy, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of, this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View, of my improved ironing-board.
Corresponding parts in the several figures A are denoted bylike letters of reference.
This invention relates to ironing-boards; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of they same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the body of the ironing-board, provided upon its under side-with two lugs, B B, to which levers O Glarepivoted. A leg or support, D, is pivoted between the inner ends of levers G in such manner as to be capable of being folded under the board. The upper end of leg D is provided with a notch or recess, E, corresponding with a similar recess, F, in a cross-piece, G, under board A, which said cross-piece forms a stop, preventing the leg from being unfolded beyond a vertical position.
It will be noticed that by adjusting the setscrew H so as to depress the outer ends of thelevers G, with the leg D extended in a vertical position, the inner ends of said levers, with 40 the upper end of the leg, will be caused to approach the table and the leg be firmly held against the table, supporting the table in its horizontal position. By releasing the press,- ure of the screws 11 sufficiently to permit of swinging or folding the leg D against the table and again tightening them, the leg is held in the latter position, out of the way, when the table is not in use.
The outer ends of the levers O are provided with thumb-screws H H, adapted to press against the under side of the board A when leg D is unfolded, thereby forcing the said leg up against the under side of board A, and causing it to be retained by the friction thus created in a vertical position.
The end of the board is provided with hooks or other suitable means for attachment to the edge of an ordinary table, and the lower end of leg D may also be provided with means for hooking it to the floor.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention and its advantages will be readily understood. It is simple, inexpensive, durable, and may easily be adjusted for operation or folded previous to storing it away.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the table A, of the levers O, pivoted thereto, with their outer ends provided with set-screws H, and the leg D, pivoted to and between the levers O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MYRON MILES.
