anew and useful Sash-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sash-fasteners.
The objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such devices.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed as an embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, Figure 1 is a view in horizontal section through a Window-casing, exhibiting the fastener of this invention displayed thereon. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section, taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. i
The sash-fastener of this invention is de signed particularly for usein connection with an ordinary Window having an upper and a lower sash, although it may be used in other com'iections, if desired.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the window frame or casing; 2, the lower sash; 3, a ratchet-strip thereon; 1, the upper sash, and 5 a ratchet-strip thereon.
The casing 6 of the improved sash-fastener is attached to the window-frame 1 adjacent to the meeting ends of the upper and lower sashes. Projecting through the front wall of the casing 6 are two locking members 7 and 8, one of which engages the ratchet-strip of the upper sash and the other the ratchet-strip of the lower sash. The locking member of the upper sash is located in a plane above the locking member for the lower sash and is beveled on its lower surface. The locking member of the lower sash is beveled on its upper surface. Within the casing 6 are two oppositely extending parallel flat spring members 9 and 10, having registering cut-away portions 11 and 1'12. The flat springmembers are of unequal length, the member 9 being longer than the member 10. The locking member 7 is fastened rigidly to the free end of the spring member 9, and the locking member 8 is fastened rigidly to the free end of the spring member 10. The spring members 9 and 10 extend normally in parallel relation with the front Wall of the casing 6, being spaced therefrom by elements 13 13. At its attaching end each spring member is bent to ward the rear wall of the casing and held in place by means of a screw or bolt 14:, it being understood that the spring members extend in opposite directions and that therefore they are attached to opposite ends of the casing, the longer member 9 being located in a plane above the member 10.
An unlocking member 15, provided with an elongated head 16, that extends through the ,Window-frame 1 and lies in parallel relation with the spring members 9 and 10. is held in retracted and inoperative position normally by means of a retracting-spring 17. The unlocking member 15 is provided with a screw 18, fitting into the registering cut-away portions of the spring members and constituting a laterally-extending member adapted when the unlocking member is moved longitudinally by pulling on its elongated head and rotated to engage and retract one or the other of the spring members.
The retracting-spring1'7 serves normally to maintain the unlocking member 15 in retracted position, whereby its laterally extending member lits into the cutaway portions of the spring members. For this reason when the unlocking member is in inoperative postion rotation thereof will not affect the spring members. The elongated head 16 serves as a gravity member adapted constantly to hold the laterally-extending member 18 in proper relation with the spring members, so that when the unlocking member is moved longitudinally and rotated, as described, one or the other of the spring members will be engaged. It will be understood, of course, that the unlocking member is rotated one way to unlock one member and the other way to unlock the other member, said unlocking member constituting means normally out of engagement with the locking members and adapted to be moved longitudinally and rotated one way or the other to unlock one or the other of the locking members.
By reason of the fact that the locking members 7 and 8 are beveled in the manner described the upper sash can be raised and the lower sash lowered to close the window without operating the unlocking member.
The spring member 9 is longer than the member 10 in order that the unlocking member may have sufficient leverage thereon to cause its retraction, and consequently to unlock the locking member 7.

Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is- 1. A sash-fastener having spring members formed With registering cut-away portions, locking members operated thereby, and an unlocking member adapted to be moved longitudinally and rotated and having means to engage one or the other of the spring members.
2. A sash fastener having parallel flat spring members formed With registering cutaway portions, locking members operated thereby, an unlocking member adapted to be moved longitudinally and rotated and having an offset to engage one or the other of the spring members, and a gravity member for holding the ofl'set in proper relation to the spring members.
3. A sash-fastener having spring members formed with registering cut-away portions, locking members operated thereby, an unlocking member adapted to be moved longitudinally and rotated and having an offset to engage one or the other of the spring mem bers, and a retracting-spring normally'holding the unlocking member in inoperative position.
4. A sash-fastener having oppositely-extending flat spring members of unequal length formed With registering cut-away portions, a locking member fastened rigidly upon the free end of each spring member, and a longitudinally movable and rotatable unlocking member having a lateral offset disposed normally in alinement With the cut-away portions.
5. A sash-fastener having a casing, parallel oppositely-extending fiat spring members of unequal length attached to opposite ends thereof and formed with registering cut-away portions, a beveled locking member on the free end of each spring member, a longitudinally movable and rotatable unlocking member parallel with the spring members, a laterally-extending member on the unlocking member disposed normally in alinement With the cut-away portions of the spring members, and an elongated head for the unlocking member constituting a gravity member.
