To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANsoM R. SPooRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kent, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gates.
The improvements are adapted to be utilized on farm-gates or on those used for guarding roads crossing railways and other highways traveled by dangerous vehicles.
The object is to provide a gate of the kind named and for the purposes mentioned which is of simple construction, certain in action, and strong and durable.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts and their aggroupment in operative combination, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and the asserted novelty then particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my improvements in the annexed drawings, to be taken as a part of this specification, and where- 1n Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a portion of a fence, illustrating my improved gate as closing a gate-opening therein. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the upper lever fixed to the post B, showing the spring-actuated pawl and lever for operating the pawl. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a post of wood supporting the free end of the gate and a modified construction of the system of levers by which the gate is supported and locked in closed position.
In the drawings similar reference-notations denote like parts in all the illustrations, and reference being had thereto, A designates a post, to which are suitably fastened wires 1 of a wire fence. The character and construction of the fence do not enter into the gist of my invention, and the supporting-post A may be of either iron, wood, or composite material. At the upper and lower end portions of the post A are suitably secured eyes 2 2, projecting in direction of the line of fence and the closed gate and constituting supports with which the hinge-eyes of the gate in terengage, substantially as indicated in the drawings. Adjacent to the swingable or free end of the gate is positioned in usual manner a post B, to which the strands 3 of the fence are secured in any well-known manner.
0 designates the gate, composed of vertical end bars 4 5 and intermediate wires 6. It will be perceived that by such construction the upper and lower horizontal rails which generally unite the vertical end posts are dispensed with and the construction of the gate much simplified and cheapened. T o the end post 4, at the upper and lower end portions, are secured suitable eyes 6 6, which pivotally interlock with the eyes in the post A, thus making the gate adapted to swing on the connections when the other end is free. In the end bar 5, adjacent to the upper and lower ends thereof, are secured eyes or hooks 7 8, with which the links or hooks connected to the levers engage.
To the postB,attheupper andlower end portions, are secured bearing-plates 9 10, both of which are formed or provided with laterallyprojecting bearing-studs 11, and the plate 9 also carries a rigidly-positioned toothed segment 12, for the purpose hereinafter mentioned. On the upper bearing-stud is mounted a curved or angular lever 13, having its upper arm hooked to the upper eye in the end bar of the gate, as by a link 14:, so as to be detachable. The upper lever may be provided with a handle 15, projecting from its middle and extending frontward, as. shown. The lower curved or angular lever 12 is mounted on its bearing in reverse to the direction of the upper lever and has its lower arm detachably connected to the lower eye in the end bar of the gate. The lower arm of the upper lever and the upper arm of the lower lever are properly connected by a bar 16, so that both levers will move together to firmly stretch the connection between the gate and the levers, and also, as occasion may require,
slacken up this connection and permit the end of the gate to be detached therefrom. On the handle 15 is mounted a spring-actuated pawl 17, which engages the toothed segment in a well-known manner.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings the levers are shownin modified arrangement, but operating to efl ect the same results as attend the operation of the arrangement illustrated in the other illustration in the drawings. In the modified arrangement the levers 20 and 21 are of the elbow type and are pivotally supported on the post in reverse position, the connection to the gate being identical with that already specified. The toothed segment 22 is secured to the post intermediate of the levers, and the actuating lever 23 is extended beyond its pivot, as at 24., and the end of the extension connected to the end of the lower arm of the upper elbow-lever by a rod 25 and the upper arm of the lower elbow-lever connected to the actuating-lever at a point outside of its fulcrum by a rod 26, substantially as shown in the drawings.
The operation and utilization of the gate are substantially similar in both arrangements. The gate being hung as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, so as to swing in either direction, the links and hooks are connected, and then the actuating lever is moved to tighten up the connections and the gate will be held firmly in position. hen it is desired to open the gate, the actuating-lever is moved to loosen the connection to the gate, when the connections may be separated, leaving the gate free to swing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. The combination with a swinging gate of upper and lower eyes secured in the swinging end bar of the gate, avertical post positioned adjacent to the opening end of the gate, upper and lower two-armed levers pivotally mounted on the post, detachable connections between the levers and the eyes on the gate-bar, a rod connecting the lower arm of the upper lever and the upper arm of the lower lever, and means to operate the levers.
2. The com bination with a swinging gate of upper and lower eyes secured in the swinging end bar of the gate, a vertical post positioned adjacent to the opening end of the gate, atwoarmed lever pivotally secured to the upper end portion of the post, and provided with an integral handle-lever, a two-armed lever pivoted to the post at the lower end portion and disposed in reverse to the arms of the upper lever, a bar connecting the lower arm of the upper lever and the upper arm of the lower lever, and detachable connections between the gate-bar and the said levers.
3. The combination with a swinging gate,of an end bar, upper and lower eyes secured in the end bar, a vertical post positioned adjacent to the opening end of the gate, upper and lower bearing-studs projecting from the ver tical post, a toothed segment rigidly mounted on the upper bearing-stud, a two-armed lever fulcrumed on the upper bearing-stud'and provided with a handle, a pawl on the lever to engage the toothed segment, a two-armed lever fulcrumed on the lower bearing-stud, a rod connecting the lower arm of the upper lever and the upper arm of the lower lever, and detachable connections between the lever and the eyes on the swinging post of the gate.
