M. DURNELL.
V GATE.
No. 269,396. Patented Dec. 19, 1882.
7?zmm%a7r I fitter/My UNITED STATES PATENT Option.
MILTON DURNELL, OF EAST MONROE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO J. H. STREET AND L. J. REED, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,396, dated December 19, 1882.
Application filed June 17, 1682. (No model.)
I had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gates which are designed to be opened by vertical vibration, and which are so constructed that a person approaching the gate from either direction on horseback or in a vehicle can open the gate, and after passing the threshold can with the same facility close the gate and fasten it.
' Myinvention consists in a new and improved gate, which will he understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawing, in which the figure represents a perspective view of the gate shut, the attaching-post and the long handlevers being broken off.
The letterA designates a gate which is composed of horizontal bars attached at their free ends to strips B B, which are secured to the bars at right angles thereto. The rear or pivotal end of the gate has two strips, B B, secured to the horizontal bars, which strips'are inclined from the free end of the gate. The diagonal braces D are intended to prevent the gate from sagging, and also to serve, in combination with the side pieces B B B B, as guides for a long bolt, E, which slides upon the second rail from the top and enters a mortise in post J when the gate is shut, and locks the gate in this position. The hinged end of the gate A is connected to suitable boxes, I I, by means of pivotal extensions H H, which afford broad bearings for this end and prevent undue lateral play between the posts N N.
K Kdesi gn ate han d-levers, which have their 'fulcra on the tops of posts N N. The longest arms of these levers extend out on opposite sides of the gate at right angles thereto. The shortest arms of theselevers are connected by rods or chains Rto angular levers F, the lower extensions, g, of which have segmental slots 0 through them, and are connected to the rear parts of the braces I) by means of headed screws or bolts h. The upper extensions of the angular leversFare connected to inclined arms F, which are pivoted to the bolt E. The bolt h passes through the inclined braces D. The rods R R are inclined toward the free end of the gate, and the fulcrum thereof is atf. Consequently when either one of the long arms of levers K K is depressed the gate will be 6 simultaneouslyunlocked and opened, and when the gate is opened it can be shut by pulling down either oueof the said long arms. The fulcra atf of the rods R It pass a vertical plane in tersecting the axis of motion of the gate either 6 in the act of opening or shutting the gate. The spring S assists in shooting the bolt E forward to lock the gate.
V indicates a rest for the gate.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gate having parallel bars 0, end pieces B, perpendicular to these bars, end pieces B, fixed at an angle to the bars, a diagonal brace, an angular lever pivoted to the pieces B, to the brace D, and to a bolt, E, the rods R, and thehand-levers K,allsubstantiallyin the manner and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I afiix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
MIL'IO). DURNELL.
