UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application filed March 16, 1905- Serial No. 250,476.
To all whont it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES C. CHAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bushnell, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Check-Book, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to check-books.
The object of the invention is to provide a check-book having a stub of novel construction in the use of which calculations may readily be made without interfering with the space to receive the data commonly placed upon the stubs, thereby-to enable the user readily to determine the balance due him at the bank, and thus prevent overdrawing, and,
further, to provide a means whereby the stub may also be employed to receive business or other data; furthermore, to provide a checkbook in which when the stubs are used the stubs may readily be detached from the bookcover and a fresh supply of checks quickly be combined therewith.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a check-book, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a check-book constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrow thereon.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the cover of the book, which may be made of any suitable material and is provided on one of its sides with a wall 2, forming,.in conjunction with the side with which it is combined,a pocket 3, which may be utilized for containing receipts, money, or business papers.
Combined with the wall 2 are the checks, one of which is shown in Fig. 3, and consists of a check proper, 4:, and stub 5, the latter being equal in length and width to that of the check. Each stub is provided with two orifices 6, through which pass fastening devices 7 in the nature of ordinary paper-fasteners, which are inserted through the wall 2 and have their members 8 bent flat against the inner sides thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, thus to hold the stubs combined with the flap.
By this arrangement it will be seen that when all the checks have been used the stubs may readily be detached and'an additional supply of checks and stubs combined with the cover.
The stub, as usual, bears legends to indicate the number of the check, the date on which it is drawn, to whom payable, for what, and the amount, and in addition to this it is provided with a field 9, headed by the legend Figure here, which is designed to receive calculations that may be made relative to the balance at the bank or to receive any data that may be desired. It will be observed that this field occupies a greater portion of the length of the stub, so that ample space is thus provided for the purposes designed. In effect, the stub subserves the double function of a stub proper and a diary. The check 4 may be of the kind usually employed and is separated from the stub by a perforated line 10.
A feature of advantage attending the construction herein shown is that the check-book is adapted to be opened out flat, so that the cover constitutes a writing-pad upon which the writing upon the check may be done with the same degree of ease as 'upon an ordinary table. This will be found of great advantage where checks are made out in inconvenient places where no support in the nature of a deskor the like is to be had, and by the construction shown the last check in the book may be filled out with the same amount of ease as the first check.
It will be seen from the foregoing description that although the improvements herein defined are simple in character they will be thoroughly eifective for the purposes designed and will in a ready and practical manner provide the user with accommodation not heretofore present in check-books.
' Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A check-book comprising a cover having a pocket in one member, the inner wall of the pocket being perforated, checks having perforated stubs, and detachable fastening devices extending through the perforations in the stubs and the wall to hold the parts com- .bined.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aii ixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES C. CHAIN.
