CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1905.
. Application filed February 11, 1905. gerial No. 245,243.
To [LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HERMAN FREDERICK NEHR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cutting Implement, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a device especially adapted for cutting what is known in religious services as the host? and to so construct the device that the cutting element, which is in the form of a ring, can be produced at a minimum of cost, thus enabling it to be entirely dispensed with when dulled and substituted by others, and, further, to provide a holder for the cutting element which will be simple, durable, and of such construction that the cutter can be quickly and conveniently introduced therein and held in position for use and wherein the cutter when not needed can be placed in the holder with the cutting edge innermost, thereby protecting such edge and maintaining it in a cleanly condition.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the body of the holder and a' portion of the handle and also a vertical section through the cutting-ring, which is in position for operation; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the cutting-ring and a portion of the holder, showing the cutting-ring in reversed or protected position in the holder.
The device consists, primarily, of a holder A and a cutter B, which is removable from and is reversible in the holder. The holder A comprises a body 10 and a handle 11. The body is made circular and is given a downward taper, being of smallest diameter at its bottom, and said body is provided with a vertical slot or cut 12 and outwardly-extending ears 13 at each side of the same, through which cars a set-screw 13 is passed, so that the ends of the body may be drawn together or held apart as far as desired to decrease or increase the diameter of the body. In the further construction of the body 10 an annular recess 14 is made in its inner face at its lower edge, and opposing sockets 15 are produced upon its outer side surface, which sockets 15 receive the ends of the handle 11. The handle 11 is secured to the body 10 by means of screws 16 or their equivalents, and by thus constructing the holder in two parts it can be more readily and economically produced than when made in one piece.
The cutter B is in the form of a ringhaving a straight inner face; but at the outer face of the ring it is beveled from a point from its circumferential center inward and downward, as is shown at 17 in the drawings, in order to produce a cutting edge 18.
In operation the body 10 is adjusted so that the ring cutter B can be conveniently slipped into the recess 14 from the bottom of the holder and so that it will have sufficient frictional engagement with the said body to remain in position, as in use the upper edge of the cutting-ring has firm bearing against the upper wall of the recess 14. The cutting edge 18 of the cutting-ring when the ring is in position in the holder 10 extends down below the lower edge of the body 10 of the holder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. When the cutting-ring is not required for use, it is removed and reversed, bringing the cutting edge 18 upward, and is thus introduced into the holder, occupying the position shown in Fig. 3, and
when the ring is in the reversed position just described its cutting edge is thoroughly protected, and the body serves in a great measure to keep the cutting edge clean.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a host-cutter, comprising a ring-likebody having a transverse cut therein extending through its upper and lower edges, and an annular interior recess at its lower edge, a handle for the body, adapted to extend beyond its upper edge, adjusting means at the cut portion of the body, adapted to extend beyond its upper edge, and a ring cutter removably and reversibly located in the said recessed portion of said body.
2. A host-cutter, comprisinga holder, which holder consists of a ring-like tapering body having a transverse cut therein, ears at each side of the cut, set-screws passing through the said ears and opposing exterior sockets, a handle secured in the said sockets, and a ring outter introduced in the bottom portion of the body and having frictional engagement With I the said body.
cured in said sockets, and a ring cutter fitted to the recess in the body of the holder, the
ring cutter being reversible in the said body, 5
for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HERMAN FREDERICK NEHR.
