Description

E. C. ALVORD..
COMBINED THIMBLE AND THREAD CUTTER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 28. I912.
1 288, 79 l a Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
INVENTOR WITNESSES V ATTORNEY 'QNETE EDWARD C. ALVORD,
COMBINED THIMBLE To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD C. ALvoRD, ,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Thimbles and Thread-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in thread cutters designed for use on ordinary thimbles.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to produce a thread cutter having means whereby the same may be readily attached to any ordinary construction of thimble.
It is also my purpose to produce a thread cutter for thimbles including a body portion having bendable fingers at one of the ends thereof designed to be inserted through suitable slots in the thimble and to be bent over the inner surface of the thimble, the said body being further provided with a blade and a directing element arranged adjacent to the blade whereby the thread will be positively directed to and be readily cut by the blade.
It is a still further object of the invention to produce a device of this character which is of an extremely simple construction, cheap to manufacture and which may be readily applied to any ordinary construction of thimbles.
ith the above and other objects in view the in'iprovement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a thimble provided Ewith the improvement,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and
Fig, 4 is a perspective view of the improvement.
A thimble is indicated by the numeral 1 in the drawings and is provided, adjacent its open end with spaced slits 2.
The improvement is broadly indicated by Specification of Letters Patent.
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
AND THREAD-CUTTER.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
Application filed April 28, 1917. Serial No. 165,222.
the numeral 4 and is constructed preferably of some suitable metal to include a substantially rectangular body 5 having one of its ends provided with laterally extending bendable fingers 6. These fingers are de signed to be bent angularly along the edges of the body 4 and to be inserted through the slits 2 in the thimble l and to be further bent over the inner surface of the thimble as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. By this means it will be noted that the improvement may be readily attached to any ordinary construction of thimbles by simply slitting the said thimble to receive the fingers 6.
The body 5 of the improvement 4 is centrally slotted, dividing the same into a cutting member or blade 7 and into a directing member 8. The cutting member has its edge adjacent that of the directing member sharpened, as at 9, and the same is bent slightly outwardly of the body 5 as clearly disclosed by the drawing, lwhile the directing member is rounded or bulged inwardly, as at 10, thus providing a substantially V- shaped slot between the cutting member and the directing member. By pressing the thread against the side of the thimble and drawing it between the directing member the said thread will be readily severed as it is thought will be fully understood and if desired the edge of the directing member at the lower portion thereof which confronts the sharpened or knife edge 9 of the cutting member or blade 7 may be also sharpened.
Having thus described the invention, .what I claim is:
1. In combination with a thimble having spaced slots, of a thread cutting member including bendable fingers designed to be passed through the slots and to be bent upon the inner face of the thimble, said cutter having its inner edge sharpened and arranged angularly with respect to the fingers and a directing member arranged opposite the blade. said directing member being rounded inwardly with respect to the thimble whereby to provide a substantially V- shaped slot between the knife edge of the directing member confronting the said knife edge.
2. In combination with a thimble having two spaced slots therein, of a cutting member stamped from a single blank of material to provide a substantially T-shaped body, the extending ends of the base portion of which is adapted to be passed through the slits and to be bent against the inner face of the thimble, the central member of the body being centrally slotted and bent in opposite directions from the said slot whereby one of 10 the elements provided by the slot Will contact with the thimble andthe other element provided by the slot will be arranged out of contact with the thimble and provide a sub stantially V-shaped passage between said 15 elements.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
EDWARD C. ALVORD.
