To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK LEoPoLD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification,reference being had therein to the accompanying drawlugs.

This invention has relation to toys, and has for its object to provide a rattler which will produce a plurality of rapidly-repeated sounds.

Another object of my invention is-to construct a rattler which may be easily operated to produce spasmodic sounds of aconsiderable volume, each sound being distinct and separate from one another.

A further object of my invention is to provide a toy of this character which will be extremely simple in construction, strong and durable, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will produce a considerable volume of noise.

Briefly described, my invention consists of providing a drum having a removable head, and this drumhead is provided with a flexible strip, to which is connected a clapper, and also a cord having a plurality of knots, these knots being arranged at intervals whereby as the fingers of the person manipulating the rattler travel over the same a plurality of jerky or spasmodic movements will be imparted to the flexible strip to cause the clapper to strike the drumhead at intervals.

The above construction will be hereinafter more fully described in detail.

Referring to the drawings accompanying this application, Figure l is a vertical sectional view of my improved rattler. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line a2 an of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the flexible strip and clapper.

In the several views of the drawings accompanying this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, and the reference-numeral 1 indicates a drum which is formed with an annular band 2, this band carrying on its one end a fixed end 3, which is provided with a central aperture 4:, and in the other end of the annular band is secured a head 5, having an annular flange 6. Secured by rivets 7 7 to the head 5 is a flexible strip 8, the rivets 7 passing through apertures 9 9,formed in the end of said strip. The flange 6 is bent inwardly slightly, as indicated at 10 10, to facilitate the placing of the head 5 within the drum. The flexible strip 8, which is preferably made of rubber, is longer than the diameter of the head, and mounted centrally upon the inner face of the flexible strip is a rivet or clapper 11, which is provided with an eye 12, that is adapted to pass through the strip and have secured upon its end a cord 14, this cord being of any desired length and passing through the aperture 4: of the end 3 of the drum. The cord is provided at intervals with knots 15 15, and the mode of sounding my improved rattler is as follows: The drum is adapted to be gripped in one hand, while the cord 14 is gripped with the other, the cord being held in the fingers near the drum, and as the hand is drawn rear- Wardly and the fingers travel over the cord having knots formed thereon a plurality of jerky movements will be imparted to the flexible strip 8, and as this strip reciprocates back and forth the rivet or clapper 11 will strike the drumhead 5 and sound a plurality of sounds, each of which will be distinct and of a voluminous tone.

The drum is preferably constructed of metal, and any desired kind of metal may be used to produce diiferent tones. The heavier the metal the deeper and more melodious the tone produced. The drumhead may be mounted or secured within the drum by frictional contact with the same or may be soldered. therein, if so desired; but I preferably construct the same whereby it may be removed to permit the placing of a new flexible strip within the drum when the old one has become worn and non-expansible.

It will thus be seen that my improved rattler is constructed upon very simple lines, which will reduce the cost of manufacture to a minimum, while the noise and sounds produced from the same will be of a voluminous quantity and of a melodious quality, if desired. It will also be noted that owing to the simplicity of, manipulating the rattler the same may be operated by children in Whose hands the same is placed.

It will be observed that While 1 have only shown one flexible strip and its appurtenant parts as constructed in the drum a plurality of these strips may be employed and the cord of each strip operated between the fingers of the person sounding the same, and other slight changes in the details of construction may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A rattler comprising a drum having a head mounted therein, a flexiblestrip secured to said head, a clapper carried by said strip, a cord connected to said clapper and extending Without said drum, said cord being adapt- FREDERICK LEOPOLD.
