Jan. 24, 1933.' F. A. THALMANN TOY HOOP Filed June 6, 1931 2 w A An HEW/(H 7775177757772 @537 Zigg Patented Jan. 24, 1933 v FRANK'A. THALMANN, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN my HOOP a mlauonm a June 6, 1931i Serial No. 542504.
This-inventionappertains to amusement devices forchildren and more particularly to toy rolhng hoop.- I
One of the primary objects of my invention is to provide a novel device for rolling and guiding a hoop, so as to'efiectively ncrease the enjoyment obtained by children 111 hoop rolling.
Another object of my invention is the provision of novel means carried by the guide androlling handle for the hoop for actuating'a bell or other audible sounddevlce during the rolling of 'thehoop and thereby further provide enjoyment of a child rolling the hoo A further salient objectof my invention is the provision of a novel handle for guiding and rolling the hoop formed from aslngle length of'wire of the desired gauge, thehan- 0 dle being provided with an inwardlydirected guide-eye for receiving the hoop at one side thereof and ahorizontal portion located forwardly of the guide-eye for supportingan audiblesound device, suchas a bell.
A further object of my invention is the provision of novel means for reinforcing the handle, which-also constitutes a thumb piece for the hand of a childduring the hoop rolling process.
A further object of my invention isthe provision of means formed directly on the hoop for acting in conjunction with the guide-eye of a handle for disturbing the handle so as to ring the bell at stated periods of time during the rolling of the hoop.
A still further object: of my invention isto provide an-improved-toy hoop and guide and operating handle therefor'of the above char- 40 acter, which will be durable and eflicient, one
that will besimple and easy to manufacture arrangement .andformation ofparts, as will be. hereinafter more specifically described,
claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, inwhich:
Figure L is a side elevation of my improved'amusement device,- showing the same in use;
Figure 2 is a top. plan view of my. novel operatingv and guide handle for the hoop, a
fragment of the hoop being shown passing through the guide-eye. of said handle, the thumbrest and reinforcing band ofathe handle being shown broken away and in section to illustrate the construction thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary 'side elevation of the hoop, illustrating one of. the means for cooperation with the operating handle for sounding of the bell; Figure lis anenlarged fragmentary detail plan view. of a hoop showing another form'of the means carried thereby for coop.- eration with the operating handle for soundiing thebellg; I
Figure 5 is a detail transverse section taken on theline 5- 5 of Figure 4, looking in. the direction of the arrows, illustrating the modified form of theinvention for cooperation of the handle for soundingthe bell;
Figure 6 is anenlarged. fragmentary'view of a hoop,.showing a still: further modified form of means on the hoopfor cooperation with the handle for sounding the bell.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A generally indicates a hoop constructed in accordance with. my invention, and B my novelguide and operatinghandle for the hoop. I preferably form the hoop.A? ofa single length ofv round wire of the desired gauge and the ends of the wire can be soldered or 7 otherwise secured to form the endless band construction. As shown in Figure l of the drawing, the outer face of thehoop ,A can be provided at equally distantly spaced points with cutout transversely extending V-shaped notches 6 for the purpose which will. be later described.
My improved operatingand guide handle i B forms 1 one 4 of the essential features of my 1nvent-1on and the same is constructed from a singlelength of wire of a desired gauge. The wire is bent so as to form asubthe spaced longitudinally extending side bars or legs 7.
These legs are connected together at their front ends by a transversely extending front cross bar 8. At the rear ends, the side bars or legs 7 are jointed by the arcuately connecting bight portion or bar. The side bars 7 are preferably contracted or bent inwardly toward one another intermediate their ends, as clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing. This divides the frame or operating "handle into a rear hand grip portion lO'and a front enlarged operating portion 11. The 'c'on tracted portion ofthe frame is reinforced by Versely across the central portion-of the hana sheet metal plate 12 which extends transdle and has its terminals coiledlor bent around the side bars 7 as at 13. This plate forms a thumb irestfor the hand-grip 10. I also preferably connect the; ends ofthe wire forming the handle at this point and the plate '12 forms the means for connecting the ends of the wire together.
One side bar 7 between the plate 12 and front cross bar 8 is looped or coiled to provide the inwardly directed guide-eye 14;
which receives the hoop A,"as in Figures 1 and 2. I
Mounted onthe front cross bar 8 is the sounding toy bell 15 which can be of any desired character. Mounted within the bell body is a suitable clapper 16.
In the operation of myimproved device, the hand gripportion 10 is grasped by the clearly shown :hand of a child and the handle is placed at the rear of the hoop at the most advantageous point, according to the height of the child.
The handle of the hoop is now pushed forwardly so as to rollthe hoop.
The handle will form an effective means for guiding the hoop in motion and the guideeye 14: forms a similar means for guiding the hoop. As the hoop slides. through the guide-eye, the guide-eye will engage the notches- 6 which will vibrate the handle and thus set the bell in action. 4 a
V A It is obvious that any other means in lieu of the notches 6 can be employed on the hoop for cooperation with the handle B for sounding the bell and infFigures 4c and 5, I have illustrated another form of this means. i
If desired, as shown in the said Figures 4: and 5, the hoop can be provided with struckin portions 20 on opposite sides, at spaced points to provide the lateral extending ears 21. These ears form the means for engaging the' guide-eye to vibrate the handle and sound the bell.
' 'As shown in Figure, 6 of the drawing, the
' outer periphery of the hoop can be provided with pairs of spaced protuberances' or lugs 22 for actuating the handle. These lugs or protuberances.22can-be formed on the sides of the hoop instead of on the outer face of the hoop, if preferred.
From the foregoing description, it can be seenrthat I have provided an exceedingly simple and novel means for guiding and operating a hoop, which will materially aid in they enjoyment obtained by children from hoop rolling. V v Changes in detail may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but what -I claim as new is:
, .1.' An amusement device comprising a hoop, an operating and guide handle forthe hoop comprising an open frame including spaced longitudinal side bars and a front connecting cross bar, a guide-eye for the hoop carried by one of the side rails adjacent to the front cross bar said guide eye being of a diameter slightly greater than the diameter of the material from which the hoop is formed, a hell on, said front cross bar, and means on the hoop for engaging the guideeye during the passage of the hoop therethrough for vibrating said handle to sound the bell. v v j n 2. An amusement device comprising a hoop, an operating and guide handle for the hoop including an opening frame having spaced side bars and a front connecting cross bar, the side bars converged inwardly intermediate their 'ends,a reinforcing plate connecting the side bars at the converged. portions .thereof dividing the-handle into a rear grip portion and a frontoperating portion,
an inwardly directed guide-eye formed on one of the'side bar sbetween the plate and the. front cross bar receiving the hoop, a bell carried by the front cross bar, and means on the hoop for engaging the guide-eye for vibrating the handle during the passing of the hoop therethrough to sound the bell.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a guide and operating handle for hoops comprising an open frame handle formed from asingleand operating handle for 'hoopscomprising an open frame handle formed from a single length of wire including longitudinal side bars, a front transversely extending cross bar and a rear connecting cross bar, side bars being converged intermediate their ends defining areal hand grip portion and apfront operating portion, an mwardly directed one of the side bars" adjacent to the front cross bar, abell on said front crossbar and a coiled hoop receiving guide-eye formed on reinforcing plate connecting said side bars together at the converged portions thereof, defining a thumb rest for the hand grip portion of the handle.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin,
