Description

No. 767,470. PATBNTED AUG. 16, 1904.
. J. 0. ZUTT.
WINDOW OPENER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 6, 1903.
N0 MODEL.
Patented August 16, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. ZUTT, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
WINDOW-OPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,470, dated August 16, 1904. Application filed December 5, 1903. Serial No. 183,869. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. ZUTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in I/Vindow-Openers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Window-openers.
It has for its object to provide a device having means adapted to bridge the upper rail of the lower sash and be brought to bear on the lower rail of the upper sash and then pulled down to thereby force the upper sash down a short distance and also means adapted to be brought to bear on the top rail of the upper sash after it has been pulled down a short distance to pull it all the way down and also to engage either sash to raise it.
It has for a further object to provide a device of the character set forth possessing advantages in point of simplicity, inexpensiveness, strength, and general utility.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of my window-opener. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a modification of the head.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are denoted by the same reference character.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, 1 designates the head, comprising a transverse cross-bar 2, having forwardly and downwardly extending arms 3 and a rearwardly-extending arm 4, secured to the crossbar by screws 5. The head is permanently secured to the upper end of the handle 10 by means of a hole 11 in the cross-bar, through which said end passes and is then riveted.
Referring now to the modification, Fig. 3, in this form of my device the arm 15 is formed integral with the cross-bar and the head is removably secured on the upper screw-threaded end of the handle by means of a hole 16 in the cross-bar engaged thereby.
The operation is as follows: To lower the upper sash, the downwardly-extending portions of the arms are brought into engagement with the lower rail of the sash and the handle pulled down until the forwardly-extending portions of the arms strike the top rail of the lower sash. The device is then removed and the rearwardly-extending arm engaged over the top rail of the upper sash and the arm pulled down until the sash is entirely lowered. To raise either sash, the rearwardlyextending arm is inserted under the top rail thereof and the handle pushed up.
I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variations and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent A window-opener having a head comprising a cross-bar, forwardly and downwardly extending arms and a rearwardly extending arm, and a handle one end secured to said cross-bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
JOHN C, ZUTT.
