Be it known that I, HERMAN J. LINDE- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ann Arbor, in the county of Washtenaw, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tindow-Openers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in window openers, and particularly to devices for opening the upwardly swinging cellar windows.

One object of the invention is to provide a novel and simple device of this character by means of which a cellar window can be quickly and easily raised into open position without the necessity of standing on a box or chair.

Another object is to provide a device of this character which includes novel means fer holding the window in elevated position which can be readily engaged or released by a person standing on the cellar floor.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connect-ion with the accompanying drawing.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, there is shown a casing A formed of a single piece of sheet metal and doubled on itself to provide the two side plates 10,'so that the forward side of the casing will be open and the rear side closed. The top and bottom are also open and at the top the side plates are formed with laterally extending ears 11 which are adapted to be secured to the lower face of the joist 12 at a point adjacent the arc of swing of the window 13, but just out of the path thereof. wedge gripping jaws between which the chain 15 which passes over the pulley 16 mounted within the casing, is adapted to engage. One end of the chain is provided with a suitable fastening device which is .adapted to be attached to the` inner face of the lower rail of the window sash, while the remaining portion of the chain depends from the opposite side of the pulley.

To raise the window, its fastener is first released, and then the depending end of the chain pulled so as to raise the window into open position. When the window has been raised to the proper height, a rearward pull of the chain is given to engage it between the members 14, thus locking the window in a suspended position. To lower the window it is only necessary to move the chain forwardly out of engagement with the members 14 and permit the window to swing downwardly. Thus there is provided a similar and eflicient device whereby the upwardly swinging cellar windows can be conveniently opened and held in such position by the average person, without the necessity for standing on a box or chair.

It is well known that such cellar windows have the hook and eye carried respectively by the rafter or joist and the lower ear of the sash, and only a tall person can reach up and engage or disengage the hook and eye, the person of average height requiring the aid of a box or chair to reach the same. lith the present device, the window can be conveniently opened and held in such position, and also conveniently closed from a position on the cellar ioor.

llVhat is claimed is The combination with a window pivoted at its upper edge portion, of a casing mounted adjacent thereto, a pulley rotatably mounted in the casing, a strand connected to the lower portion of the window and trained over and downwardly from the pulley, t-he casing at the side of the pulley opposite to the window extending transversely of the pulley and having an edge directed toward the pulley and window in a plane below the axis of the pulley and provided with a notch opening toward the pulley, the notch being so formed and disposed that when the free end portion of the strand swings away from the pulley beyond the vertical tangent of the pulley remote from the Window it Will engage and bind in the notch7 whereby when the strand Swings under the influence of rapid travel over the pulley, it Will engage the notch and be held therein.
