PATENT CEEI E.
JAMES E. JOSEPHI AND INA O. J OSEPHI, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION SUSPENDERS AND STOCKING-SUPPORTER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,978 dated February 2, 1904, Application filed February 20, 1903. Serial No. 144,265- (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J AMES E. J OSEPHI and INA O. J OSEPHI, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Suspenders and Stocking-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements made in means or devices for supporting garments; and it has for its object, chiefly, the production of an improved trousers -suspender and stocking-supporter in one structure especially adapted for boys wear in connection with short trousers or breeches and long hose and having several novel and useful features and advantages, as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
To such ends and object our said invention consists in the described construction and combination of shoulder straps or bands and adjustable fastening devices adapted to connect the trousers and the stockings directly to the shoulder-straps, as hereinafter explained, and pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings herein referred to, Figure 1 represents in front view our improved combination suspenders and stocking supporter. Fig. 2 represents the same in position on the person of aboy wearing knee-breeches and long hose.
A B indicate two bands or strips of webbing such as is employed in the manufacture of suspenders, one for the right and the other for the left side. At the back the two strips are preferably joined and united to a single strip D, to the lower end of which are attached two loops or straps E E, with holes F for the buttons on the back of the trousers-waistband, after the well-known manner of joining a pair of mens suspenders at the back, whereby the two shoulder straps are attached at the back of the trousers to a single set of two buttons instead of providing each Suspender-strap on the back end with its own pair of loops for attaching the two straps on the back to two sets of buttons.
G on the front of the Suspender-straps A B indicates a movable buckle or slide, and H H are two loops or straps with apertures for the suspender-buttons on the front of the trouserswaistband, the buckles carrying these loops being adjustable longitudinally on the shoulder-straps for the purpose of increasing or reducing the distance between the front loops and those on the back. Beyond this point where the loops H are attached the shoulderstrap is prolonged and doubled on itself, producing a long loop, as seen at K, Fig. 1, and the end of the doubled portion is secured to the main portion of the shoulder-strap by. an adjustable buckle or grip L. This fastening is of suitable character to allow the loop 'K to be lengthened or shortened by loosening the fastening and slipping it up or down on the principal strap.
M N are straps of elastic and relatively narrow fabric attached to the ends of the long loops K by rings P, and each having on its ends a clip or gripping device, such as a stud R and a slotted plate S, so constructed as to grip the fabric of the stocking when it is inserted between them.
As thus constructed, the suspenders AB are placed and attached to the garments by placing them on the shoulders with the long front ends passing down inside the trousers between the waistband and the shirt or garment next to' the trousers and attaching the back loops to the buttons on the back of the waistband, after which the lower straps M N are secured to the tops of the stockings. The required degree of tension to draw up the stockings and hold them from sagging or wrinkling is secured by moving the fastening L up or down on the strap, and the front straps Hare connected to the buttons on the waistband. Attached in this manner the suspenders act to support one garment separately of the other and at the same time to throw the strain or weight of each part directly upon the shoulders of the wearer in such manner as tobring the weight of the trousers and also the required strain or tension on the stockings on the most direct lines from the shoulders.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V 1. The herein-described combined trouserssuspenders and stocking-supporter, comprising the suspender-Strips having extensible front end portions, waistband-straps attached to the back ends, straps on the front of each strip adjustable longitudinally thereon and adapted for attachment to the front of the trousers-waistband, and a fastening device on the lower end of each strip for securing the stocking thereto, said fastening device being adjustable longitudinally by varying the length of the Suspender-strip.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of the Suspender-strips having loops on the back end for attaching the same to the back of trousers-waistband, a pair of straps on the front of each suspendernesses.
