PATENT FEIc CASPER ZIMMERMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES ANDERSON'AND J. M. KNADLE, OF VIENNA, SOUTH DAKOTA.
DEVICE FOR PROTECTlNG CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 732,988, dated July '7, 1903..
v A Application filed April 3, 1903. Serialll'o. 150,982. (No model.)
To all whom itmay concern: I
Be it known that I, CASPER ZIMMERMAN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Protecting Cars;
1 and Ido declare the following to be a fu1l,clear,
. of a car and fit over the end thereof and bel ing made of a substantial metal, cast steel or iron, adapted to resist an enormous pressure lncident to cars coming in contact with each other in wrecks, &c., to prevent telescoping of the cars.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangeinentsof parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a passengercar, showing my protecting-shell as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the shell removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view centrally through the shell.
Reference now being bad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body portion of a passenger-car of the usual. construction, and B designates my improved protecting-shell, which may be made either of a single piece of cast metalor of plates of either malleable or cast metal securely riveted together, the thickness of the protecting-shell being sufficient to withstand an enormous pressure incident to collisions. In the drawings I have shown the shell as made of a single piece of metal and having a door-opening 0, about which is a flanged border D, bolted thereto, and a platform E, which is adapted to rest upon the platform of a car. Projecting at right angles from the front or the portion of the shell having a door-opening are the right-angled wings F, which are bolted to the sides of the car, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. An integral plate K projects at right angles from the highest portion of the shell and is adapted to be bolted to the top of the car. These plates are so constructed as to fit various cars, either passenger or freight, and when applied in the manner shown are adapted to equalize the impact of a collision and distribute the force over the entire length of the car, and, being made of thick metal, will withstand an enormous pressure.
protecting apparatus embodying my invenchanges therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- a A protecting apparatus for cars, comprising a shell of metal adapted to conform to and fit over the end of a car, said shell having a platform, and arms which project over the sides and top of the car and adapted to be bolted or otherwise secured thereto, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afi'ixlmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
CASPER ZIMMERMAN,
Witnesses:
A. L. HOUGH, FRANKLIN H. HOUGH.
