Description

such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it certain novel features of construction and' combina l the claims. l l
UNITED STATES APATENT tirreno FRANK L. IRWIN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO7 ASSIGNOR To THE RALSTON STEEL OAR COMPANY, or OOLUMBUS, OIIIO.
RAILWAY-CAR.
Nmseopeo.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1907.
Application filed May 20,1907. Serial No. 374,657.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FR'ANK L. IRWIN, of Columbus, in the county otFranklin andState of Ohio, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Railway-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
appertains to make' and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in railway carsand more particularly to the side stakes to which the side boarding or steel sides, as thev case may be, of a car is securedf-the object of the invention being to provide a side-stake which shall be so constructed as to effectually withstand all lateral strain which may he brought to bear against it.'
With this object in view'the invention consists in tions of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in In the accompanying'drawngs, Figure l isla fragmentary perspective View illustrating my improvements and their application lto a car, and Figs. 2 and 3 l are views of modifications.
.l represents a car bolster and 2 the cover plate there? for, to both of which my improved stake' 3 is secured. This stake 3 consists of an angle iron upright having side flanges 4.- which are made of increasing width from theirl upper t'o their lower ends in order to permit the stake to more readily withstand lateral pressure. l'he side flanges 4 are slit at their lower ends and portions are bent outwardly to form horizontal lugs 5 which are disposed upon the cover plate 2 and are secured thereto by means oi suitable bolts or rivets l5. That portion of the flanges which depend below the lugs 5 are disposed parallel with the` inner laces of the bolster memhers and securely bolted or riveted to saidememllers. l The body' portion of the stake between the llangesA affords a bearing for the side timbers or steel sides of vshoulders 8 which rest upon the cover plate.
i thc presence ol` two subscribing witness s.
the carwhich are securely bolted or riveted thereto.
Instead of bending the lug 5 outwardly, as above describedL the slittod lower ends of the flanges lanay be bent to form inwardly projecting lugs 7 secured to-the cover plate.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the lower ends ol the flanges 4 of ,the stake are notched so as to form Between the flanges 4 adjacent to the shoulders San angle iron brace `9 is disposed and securely riveted to the flanges 4 and to the cover plate 2.
My improved construction affords, not only a rigid and substantial stake, but insures an effective connection between said stake and the ca'r bolster.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,-
1. 'lhe combination'with a ear bolster und a cover' plate therefor, of a side stake comprising an upright having side flangesv secured to the bolster and means securing,r said side flancfes to the cover plate.
A side slnke'lor a car comprisingan upright' provided with side flanges, and lugs projecting laterally from snid flanges at points above their lower ends.
I5. A side stak'e for :I car comprisinglr :in upright provided with side flanges having shoulders aliovc their-lower ends. :ind means for conncctim; the side flanges with a cover plate, said means Iorfnled adjacent lo said shoulders.
l.-A Side stake for n. car comprising an upright provided willi parallel side [langes inc-.refiningr in depth from the nppcr to the lower end ol id stake, the lower portions of each side flange slit vertically und having,y a portion of. the
metal lient laterally.
'llio combination with a liolsler comprising Lwo memlicrs :ind n. cover plate on said members, of :i side stake comprisingrnn upright provided with lo flanges having their lower ends disposi-d between and s. ycured to the menilims of the bolster, und ears projecting' laterally [reims-uid llnnges nliove their lower ends und .sf-,cured to the cover pinto. V
ln lestimony whereof, l have signellthls specification in y FRANK L. inwiN.
