PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT c. POOL, or LINDALE, TEXAS.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent N 0. 738,063, dated September 1, 1903.
Application filed August '7, 1902.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT C. POOL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lindale, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in buckles; and the object is to provide a simple and convenient construction of buckle which may be quickly and readily attached to or detached from the straps and which will permit of the ready and rapid adjustment of the straps and at the same time will positively hold the same in their adjusted positions.
lVith the above object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanyingdrawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a buckle in connection with two straps; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of the members detached from the strap, and Fig. at a similar view of the other member.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the base member, comprising a plate having a transversely-extending slot 2 near one end to receive the strap 3, which passes loosely therethrough and having its opposite end bent at right angles thereto and then to extend substantiall y parallel therewith, forming a recess or groove 4.
5 designates the movable clamping member, comprising a plate having parallel transverselyextending slots 6 6, through which the strap 3 is passed. The two members are thus movably held together by the strap 3, which is attached to member 5 by being passed through the slots 6 G, as stated, said strap being then passed through slot 2 of member 1. Member 5 is positioned upon the face of Serial No. 118,764. (No model.)
member 1, having the recess thereon, and the end edge of member 5, which is provided with serrations or teeth 7, is adapted to extend into this recess when in clamping position, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Said member 1 may be termed a hook member, as the bending of the end thereof to form a recess forms what may be termed a hook 9, in which the strap a is clamped by the serrated edge of member 5 and which also prevents lateral. movement of said member 5.
. In operation the two members are connected by the strap 3, as before stated, and the strap a or other article to be attached is placed in the recess 01' hook of member 1 and the serrated end of member 5 inserted in said recess. Tension then being applied to the straps, member 5 is forced into said recess, tightly clamping the strap 4. This clamping movement of member 5 is effected through themediuin of the manner in which the strap 3 is arranged, said strap passing loosely through member 1 at a point forward of its attachment to member 5, so that a pull on said strap serves to move the latter member forwardly into the recess or hook.
It will be seen that the member 5 may be readily adjusted upon the strap 3 and that said member may be readily removed from the recess of member 1 to release the strapet or other article. It will be seen also that the device may be used in many connectionsas, for instance, it would make a very convenient construction of garmentsupporter, it being capable of easy attachment and when attached will securely hold the article to which it is attached.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination with a plate having one end turned backward to form a transverselyextending groove and formed near its opposite end with a transversely extending slot, and a clamping-plate having a lower serrated edge to engage in said groove and formed with two parallel, transverselyextending slots, of a strap extending through said parallel slots of the clamping-plate and over the fixed my signature in the presence of two witupper edge of said clamping-plate and through nesses. the slot in the first-named plate whereby the serrated edge of the clamping-plate is caused ROBERT POOL 5 to clamp a strap or other article in said groove \Vitnesses:
of said first-named plate. T. A. COLEMAN, I11 testimony whereof I have hereunto af- J. R. CHEEK.
