To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. MAUZY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Broadway, in the county of Rockingham, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a buckle.

An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character of such construction that the detachable end of the strap when attached thereto will be held by a pivoted tongue and also frictionally clamped at a second point so that all of the strain applied to the strap will not be transmitted to the pivoted tongue, but the said strain will be applied between these points of frictional connection.

I have so constructed the device that the frictional clamping means will engage the upper surface of the free end of the strap throughout its entire width and as force is applied to the strap will force the lower surface downwardly in contact with the upper surface of the fixed end of the strap.

With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and falling within the scope of the appended claim.

Referring to the drawing z-Figure l is a side elevation of my device, with a strap connected thereto, the parts being shown in the positions they will assume when the end of the strap is being inserted beneath the frictional clamping means. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in the positions they will assume when the strap is held by both the pivoted tongue and the frictional clamping means. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view with the parts in such position as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is an enlarged perspective View of the buckle.

Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views :My device comprises a frame having spaced side bars 1 connected at their forward ends by an integral cross bar 2. The rear ends of these side bars 1 are projected outwardly from the Specification of Letters Patent.

Extending between and slidably connected to the side bars 1 adjacent the rear ends thereof is a bar a to which one end of a strap, belt or the like is adapted to be permanently connected so that when the bar 4. is moved rearwardly toward the ends of the side bar 1, the loop 5 of the said strap will contact with the cross bar 3.

Extending between the side bars 1 adjacent the other ends thereof and rigidly secured thereto is a bar 6 on which is pivotally' supported a tongue 7, the end of which is arij'anged so as to bear against the end cross In use one end of a strap is secured to the bar 4, as at 5, and passed rearwardly beneath the end bar 3, the free end of the strap is then inserted in the space between the bar 6 and the end bar 2 and the tongue 7 is inserted in one of the holes in the end of the strap. The end of the strap is then carried over the tongue 7, over the loop and beneath the end bar 3 so that as force is applied to the strap the sliding bar 4 will move toward the ends of the the side bars 1 and onto the bent portions thereof so that the free end of the strap which has been inserted beneath the end bar 3 will be clamped frictionally between the end bar and the said loop 5. By this arrangement it may be seen that as the pull on the strap is increased the clamping action between the loop 5 and the end bar 3 on the free end of the strap will be proportionately increased.

From the foregoing description it may be readily seen that I have provided a buckle by means of which the free end of a strap which is at its other end positively connected to the buckle, will be clamped in position on said buckle by a pivoted tongue and a frictional clamp and therefore the tendency of the pivoted tongue to tear the strap will be completely overcome inasmuch as the frictional clamp will form the main supporting means. Furthermore by using the frictional clamp in connection with a pivoted tongue buckle all possibility of the free end of the strap becoming disengaged from the tongue is obviated, inasmuch as the strap will not slide beneath the frictional clamping means.

While I have described and illustrated a particular embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that it has merely been for the sake of convenience and I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment for it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the scope of the invention as defined by the claim.

What is claimed is In combination, a buckle having spaced side bars, bent upward between their ends, an end bar connecting the upwardly bent ends a cross bar slidably mounted on the side bars and movable toward the end bar, a strap having one end passed about and secured to the slidable cross bar and the other end passing between the slidable cross bar cross bar will bind the ends of the strap bev tween itself and the first-mentioned cross bar, and means at the other end of the buckle to engage a strap.
