UNITED STATES Patented May 19, 1903.
GEORGE D. LEADBETTER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PERAMBULATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 0. 728,253, dated May 19, 1903. v ,Application filed October 21,1902. Serial No. 128,155. (No model.)
be spaced from said handle-frame a slight all whom it may concern! Beit known that LGEORGE D.LEADBETTER,
a citizen of the United States,- residing at De-' troit, in thecounty'of Wayneand State of Michigan, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Perambulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying-drawings. V I 1 The invention has particular reference to folding perambulators; and it consistsin the Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating theadjusting mechanism for the back frame.
The reference-letter A designates the bandle-frame of the perambulator, provided with a'forwardly-extending section B, which carries the front wheels 0. Pivoted intermediate 0fitsends to the handle-frame is the complementary frame D. This .frame projects re'arwardly of the handle frame and carries the rear wheels E.
' Edesignates bearings in the form of apertured ears securedto the handle-frame A and projecting forwardlytherefrom. Pivoted" within these bearings istheseat G, carrying studs a, which engage the apertures in the Hrepresents brackets, one upon each side of the seat in proximity toits rear edge. Each bracket has aslot I formed. therein, extending rearWardly-in'a substantially horizontal direction and then upwardly at. an angle thereto. I
J represents studscarrie'dupon the'zforw-ardj free ends of the complementary frame D, which engage the slots in the brackets. The brackets and the forward portion of the complementary frame are so arranged and proportioned that upon the folding of the seat the studs J will travel within the slots and the two frames will be drawn into afolded position. When folded, the seat, being journaled in advance of the handle-frame, will distance, the space being sufiicient to receive the cushion ordinarily carried on the seat. Means are thus provided for permitting the .seat to be folded compactly against the handle-frame to occupy a minimum'amount of space with thecushion thereon.
K' designates a rear frame or back which hasIa pivotal connection'at its lowerend with the handle-frame. The preferable connection.I -have shown as consisting ofa rod 0,
extending transversely of the handle-frame and passing through the lower end portions of the back. A similar rod d is preferably secured to the rear' side ofthe back frame and projects a slight distance beyond the opposite -sides thereof, forming studs or jour- 'nals (1. Racks L are provided for the handleframe, one upon eachside thereof, with which the studs or journals (1 are adapted to engageand permit of the back being ,moved and locked into difiere'nt positions of adj ustment relative to the handle-frame.
M represents the arm-rests of the peram- 'bulator, each pivoted tothe back frame K,
being preferably connected to. the studs (1, v
and O is a folding foot-rest which has co'nof the seat, and the ends of each pair being pivoted respectively to the. arm-rest M and to the foot-rest O. One or.moi'e of these'connecting members maybe secure'd'to the seat G. The preferable construction isas shown,
wherein the members e of each pair are pivoted t0 the seat, as at f. 7
It will be-obvious from the construction of the perambulator that the seat uponjbeing folded into parallelism with the back frame not only causes the two complementary frames to be drawn together, but also moves the arm-rests and the foot-,restintouplanes parallel with the handle-section, the parallel connecting members described acting to turn the foot-rest so that itwill assume a vertical position. It will be further noticed that as the back frame is adjusted either rearwardly or forwardly relative to the handle-frame the foot-rest is correspondingly adjusted, but in an opposite direction, so that it will be in a proper inclined position relative to the back for the occupant when either in an upright or inclined position.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a perambulator, the combination with the wheeled handle-frame having forwardlyextending bearings, of the seat, supplemental bearings secured to the seat and pivoted at their rear edges to the forwardly-extending bearings, said supplemental bearings having slots therein, and a complementary wheeled frame pivoted to the handle-frame and having studs for engagement with the slots in the supplemental bearings.
2. In a perambulator, the combination with the wheeled handle-frame having forwardlyextending bearings, of the seat, supplemental
