PERAM BU LATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 725,167,- dated. April 14, 1903.. Application filed September 9, 1902i Serial No: 122 668. (Nu model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. SOUTHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Perambulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates particularly to perambulators of the folding type; and it consists in the novel construction of the device and in the peculiar arrangement and combination of the various parts thereof, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth and illustrated.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a perambulator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line a; 00, Fig. 1.
In the drawings thus briefly described, A designates a handle-frame comprising a substantially vertical section B, constituting the push handle for the device, and a lower and forwardly-inclined section 0, to which are connected the front wheels D.
E designates apertured members in the form of ears arranged one at each side of the frame A at the juncture of its sections.
F designates the seat of the perambulator, to the rear edge of which is secured a rod G, the ends of which engage the apertured ears and form a pivotal connection between the seat and handle-frame. A guide H is arranged at each side of the seat, as shown, the guide being formed of a U-shaped bar a, extending substantially the entire widthof the seat and secured to the under face thereof, as indicated.
J designates a rearwardly-extendin g frame comprising sidebars b and rods 0 and 01, connecting the upper and lower ends of the bars. This frame is pivoted centrally to the forwardly-inclined section of the handle-frame and carries at its lower end the rear wheels K of the perambulator. The upper end of the frame J has a sliding engagement with the seat, whereby the frames may be folded into parallelism and the seat turned in a ver tical position substantially parallel with the back. The sliding engagement referred to is effected by means of the cross-bar c, which extends and slides within both guides.
A foot-rest L is preferably provided for the perambulator, supported by bars M, pivoted centrally to the seat. The upper ends of the bars are connected to the handle-frame by arms 0, pivoted, respectively, to the handleframe and bars M, as indicated. A swinging back P is also employed, pivoted at its lower edge to the cross-bar G and connected to the seat-frame by links Q.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a perambulator, the combination with a handle-frame having side bars, of a seat, a back inclining rearwardly from the seat, a cross-bar pivotally securing both the seat and back to the handle-frame, foldable pivoted links connected to the back and extending forwardly therefrom, and connected to the inner sides of the side bars of the handleframe, so that both the back and links may be folded therebetween, guides at the sides of the seat and a wheel-frame pivoted to the handle-frame and engaging at its upper end the guides on the seat.
2. In a perambulator, the combination with a handle-frame having separated side sections providing an obstructed space therebetween, of forwardly-extending ears on the side sections, a seat, a back inclining rearwardly from the seat, a cross-bar pivotally secu ring both theseat and back to the ears on the ban.-
dle-frame, and forwardly-extending foldable links connecting the back to the inner sides of the side sections of the handle-frame, so that both the back and links may be folded therebetween. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
v FRANK E. SOUTI-IARD. Witnesses: JOHN N. SNEIDER, JAY BENSON.
