De it known that I, JOSEPH B. HARRIS, of Germantown, in the. county of Mason, and State of Kentucky, have invented ar new and useful Improvcmentin Safety-Jackets for preventing steamboat chimneys and other metal smoke or fire-fines from setting tire to wooden decks, floors, or walls, or other inflammable substances in close proximity thereto; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation'of the same, reference-being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedrthereon. -I
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a steamboat chimney, and of my safety-jacket as applied thereto, and Figure 2 is a plan view of across-section in line a; x, g. 1. v A is the chimney. B is the wooden deck. C is an annular series of airchambers surrounding the chimney.
, D is another annular series of chambers surrounding C, and concentrcthcrewith, and lled with a non-conducting substance, hereinafter described. E is an outer case or jacket surrounding the whole. F is a shield, packed with the same non-conducting substance to protect theunder side of the deck fiom the heat of the ue between the chimneys, and from the heat of the furnace-mouth. Said annular series of air-chambers C is formed by interposing a corrugated plate, c, between two cylindricalplates, thus dividing the space between them into a number of separate chambers, c; but it is. manifest it may be divided otherwise, as by radial partitions, 4or in any other way that will form a series of air-spaces or iiues all `around the chimney. These air-spaces c are to be open at both ends, above and below the deck, at o o', or when passing horizontally through a wall, onboth sides of the wall. c y
The annular space D may be divided into separate chambers'd, in the same way as the inner annular space C. These outer chambers d are all to be packed tight with a tire-proof and non-conducting substance, composed of the residuum of bituminous schist or shale, prepared in accordance with Letters Patent of the United States granted to me, and bearing date July 3, 1866, No. 56,044, andas follows, to wit: I take schist or shale, formed in connection with bituminous coal havingbut little bitumen in it, and subject it to heat, in a retort or kiln, till all the bituminous and volatile substance has been expelled, and the resduum has been reduced Yto friable and pulverous condition of a light ash or pearl color. This pulverous residuum is then bolted through a ne bolt to free it of all lumps or gritty or combustible particles, when it is ready for use in carrying into effect this invention. This substance shouldbe packed into the chambers d in a'heatedconditiomand when all damp= ness has been thoroughly expelled said chambers are to be closed air-tightat both ends, by metal plates or coverings; but it' the packing is not perfectly dry, before closing them, .there will be danger of their bursting' from the steam generated fromthe moisture.
It is not absolutely necessary that the annular spaces C and D should be divided into separate chambers, as described, although I prefer to so divide them; and some kind of stays, between the outer and inner cylinders', will be found necessary, if tight partitions are not used. i
The inner annular space C, or annular series of chambers c', will always have a current of air passing through, which will have a tendency to reduce thev heat of the chimney or pipe, and check the conduction of heat to the outer drum D; while said outer annular space D, or annular` series of chambers d, being packed with the non-combustible and slow conducting substance herein described, will renderit impossible for the moet intense heat of the chimney or pipe to ignite the most combustible substances in direct contact with the outer portion of this safety-jacket. The re-proof substance or packing, herein described, may be produced from scmi-hitnn1inous coal, treated in the manner herein described, but I- prefer schist or shale.
When this-sai`etyjacket is to be applied to large pipes, liable to become intensely heated, as steamboat chimneys, the annular spaces CI and D should be from th'rcc to five inches wide, but for small pipes, of thinner' metal, spaces of less width will sudicc. s y
The shield F is formed by attaching a concave plato of sheet metal to the lower side ofthe deck, and pack; ing the concavity with the same tire-proof material herein described. It is manifest that a similar shield will be applicable to many similar uses, as to prevent the heat of any stove or furnace from being communicated to any wooden or other combustible wall or floor in close proximity thereto. lt may be formed by packing a space between two metal plates, with said {ire-proof material, or a space between a metal plate and the floor or wall to be protected. y n
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A safety-jacket, for surrounding or enclosing any metal ue for conducting smoke or heat, containing an annular air-space or series of air-spaces, and an annular space or series of spaces packed with the fire-proof material herein described, the same being constructed and arranged substantially as herein set forth.
2. I also claim in a safety-jacket or shield, to prevent the conduction'or radiation of heat from pipes, "stoves, furnaces, or lires of any kind to adjacent combustible substances, an intervening space packed wit-h the lireproof material herein described, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
