My invention relates to improvements 1n lime kilns, and is especially directedto the construction of an internal furnace for a stack kiln.
Such internal furnaces areusually constructed of fire brick or other refractory material, best adapted to such usefby reason of their` Qualities to absorb a minimum of vheatunits and thus afford a maximum of burned' lime rock to a given amount of fuel. However, vsuch materials, due to the intensity of` heat involved, are' of relatively short life,
and it is the object of my improvements to combine with an internal furnace constructed of lire brick or analogous material a water cooling system which renders the maten rial of the furnace more capable of withstanding the intense heat, to the end that the furnace is givenvadditional life and is less subject to the need of repair. In the arrangement of the various parts of the cool.-AV ingg system in the internal furnace, my first' consideration has been the protection of the furnace against the heat, but, .of course, hot
water and some steam are made and these may be drawn olf as desired, the steam di rected'to aiding` the combustion of the fuel used, or to other purposes, and the hot water directedto its common usages.
lith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of the construction andzarrangement of parts, hereinafter fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated bythe accompanying drawings, in which:

Each of the drums projects through the kiln walls and each is provided, at at least one end with a man hole 25 for purposes of repair and cleaning.
Gutside the kiln structure I provide a steam dome 26 which connects with the drum 21 by means of a pipe 27, including an expansion joint 28, and said steam dome connects with the drums 13 by means of pipes 29, each of which includes an eXpansion joint 30.
Leading into each drumr 13 is a water feed pipe 31 connected at or near one end and leading away from each drum, at or near their other ends, is a blow-off pipe 32.
Extending through the walls of the kiln in line with the furnace are the poke holes 33, each of which has a suitable door 34,
' and in the kiln walls at right angles to the walls having the poke holes 33 are the poke holes 35, having closures 36, in planes above the poke holes 33.
By the construction shown and as just described, it is apparent that I have a stack kiln having a built in furnace within the stacky and arranged to have a fire zone in direct communication with the stack, so that when in use the lime rock will surround the top and both sides of the furnace.
It is further apparent that the material, any of the known ceramics, entering into the furnace proper is uniformly protected against heat by water so distributed as to place in the various parts ofthe furnace a body or volume of lwater proportionate with the dimensions of the furnace parts. In other words, the base of the furnace at each side, where the burned lime stands, I place the drums 13 which contain bodies of water sumcient to consume enough of the heat at this point to relieve the furnace of heat beyond a degree which it is designed to successfully withstand.
In the side walls of the furnace, through which there are openings formed to place the fire Zone in direct communication with the stack, I place the relatively small tubes 23, one tube being on each side of each opening, and embedded in the wall, with a small area exposed to the fire Zone. These side walls being relatively thin prohibit the use of large tubes containing large bodies of water, hence the partial exposure of the tubes to the fire to cause increased water circulation in the tubes and thus protect these thin walls against successive heat by a relatively small but rapidly circulated body of water instead of a larger, slowly circulated body7 of water as in the drums. These tubes in addition to protecting the side walls from deterioration by heat, also act as a reinforcement for the same, which is made necessary by the thinness of the wall and the number of fire openings therein.
In the top of the furnace, which occupies a position in about the center of the calcining zone of the stack, where the furnace is exposed to the greatest heat, I place the drum 21, which is of a size to contain a much larger body of water than the other bodies referred to, whereby to absorb sufficient of the heat to protect the upper furnace body. y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is:
1. A lime kiln comprising an internal furnace constructed of ceramic material, said furnace being provided with a fuel opening,
grate bars, ash pit, and whose side walls are spaced apart from the walls of the kiln and provided with a series of fire holes eXtending throughout their length, a drum located on each side of the furnace adjacent the` grate bars and partially in the heat zone, a drum of greater capacity than either of said drums located in the furnace above the combustion chamber, a series of tubes connect- ,ing the upper drum and the lower drums,
said tubes arranged adjacent to the fire openings and serve to protect the side walls from deterioration by heat and acting as a reinforcement for the same.
2. A lime kiln comprising an internal furnace constructed of ceramic material, the walls thereof being provided with a series of openings leading from the fire Zone, a horizontally disposed drum located below the grate bars and adjacent thereto in each side wall of the furnace, a drum of greater capacity than either of the first mentioned .drums horizontally disposed in the arch of the furnace, a series of vertical tubes con' necting the lower drums with the upper drum, said vertical tubes being partially exposed to the heat of the combustion chamber, said drums protecting the furnace adjacent the grate bars from the excessive heat and the vertical tubes likewise protecting the side walls of the furnace from excessive heat and also acting as a reinforcement for the side walls, and a steam drum located on the outside of the kiln and connected with said drums.
