PORTFOLIO.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
INDA ROSELLA JACKSON, OF SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA.
PORTFOLIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. '712,137, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed May 23, 1901.
To a. whom it may concern.-
' Be it known thatLINDA RosELLA JACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Santa Clara, in'the State of California, have invented a useful Portfolio, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings forming a part thereof.
My present invention pertains to improvements in portfolios, the construction and advantages of which will be hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the annexed drawings, wherein- I Figure 1 is a perspective view of the portfolio, which is shown closed; and Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the opposite face of the portfolio with the retaining member omitted.
The object of my present invention is to provide a simple and efficient portfolio adapted more specifically for carrying music, papers, and the like in a flat or unfolded condition.
Referring to the drawings, A denotes the main or body portion of the portfolio provided with side or edge strips B B, which are One end is formed with a long member 0, which when in use is folded over the side strips B, but stops short of the ends thereof, as clearly shown in both of the figures. The opposite end piece D is comparatively short and overlaps the member 0 to a slight extent when the parts are finally folded.
In order to maintain the parts in a proper closed position and at the same time permit ready access to papers, music, or the like which may be contained in the portfolio, I pass straps or bands about the portfolio, as indicated in Fig. 1. Eachstrap will preferably be given two turns, forming loops E Serial No. 61,670. (No model.)
F, which, as indicated in Fig. 1, are crossed upon the main face of'the portfolio.
A handle G is connected to the inner loops of the straps, preferably at the upper edge of the portfolio,,and forms a ready means for carrying the same.
As will be readily seen, it is not necessary to unfasten the straps to obtain access to the portfolio, for by reason of providing crossed loops the outer loop at the left of the portfolio may be slipped back in order to permit the ready withdrawal of the short end piece from engagement therewith, thereby permitting ready access to the papers contained within the portfolio. When it is desired to close the same, all that is necessary is to fold the end piece D onto the face of the portfolio and slip the loop E outwardly over the edge or end of said end piece D. The passing of the straps about the portfolio in the manner.
described prevents the same from slipping.
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim is In a portfolio, the combination of a body portion A, side flaps B, an end flap 0 extending approximately the length of the body portion, an end piece D arranged to be folded aroundand overlap the end flap O, and straps passed in two loops about the portfolio, the outer loop of one pair embracing the end piece D and adapted and arranged to be withdrawn from engagement with said piece when access to the portfolio is desired, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
INDA ROSELLA JACKSON.
